Offer Description

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto hereby opens this call for applications for a 1 (one) Research Initiation Studentship, with a view to starting their scientific training by joining the project “Relaxina-2 e hipertensão arterial pulmonar: papel fisiopatológico e potencial terapêutico” (Ref. 2022.08921.ptdc), financed by “Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)”, at Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP – abbreviation in Portuguese), under the following conditions:

1. Research area: Health Sciences.

2. Admission requirements:

To apply for the research studentship, applicants must comply with the following requirements, for which documentary evidence must be provided:

a) Students enrolled in a bachelor's degree in the area of Health Sciences or Biology or related areas, a requirement to be proven at the time of hiring[1] or;

b) Holding an academic degree[2] and being a student enrolled[3] in a non-academic degree course integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units - requirement to be proved before being hired;

c) Not have benefited from a research grant awarded under the terms of the EBI[4] ;

d) Availability to start the scholarship in March 2024 (to be mentioned in the motivation letter).


[1]  Proof of registration must be provided by the time the contract is signed. Candidates may attach a declaration of honor stating that they meet the registration requirements.


[2] In accordance with the provisions of Article 9(3) of the University of Porto's Research Grant Regulations, approved by Regulation no. 184/2021, published in the Diário da República, 2nd Series, no. 43, of 3rd March, Research Initiation Grants cannot be awarded to anyone who has already benefited from a research grant awarded under the terms of the EBI.


[3] Proof of enrolment must be provided by the time the contract is signed. Candidates may attach a declaration of honor stating that they meet the requirements for enrolment on a non-degree course.


[4] The BII cannot be awarded to anyone who has already benefited from a research grant awarded under the terms of the EBI.


3. Preferred requirements:

a) Adequacy of the Degree to the project to be developed;

b) Degree in the area of Health Sciences, or Biology or related areas;

c) Experience in basic research studies;

d) Experience in statistical treatment and data interpretation in the cardiovascular area;

e) Proficiency in the English language;

f) Good scientific writing skills;

g) Publications in national or international journals and presentations at scientific conferences from the cardiovascular area;

h) Good work capacity, organization and critical spirit.

4. Work Plan:

4.1. The purpose of this contract is to perform the following tasks:

a) Molecular biology techniques (RT-PCR, Western blotting, ELISA);

b) Processing and statistical analysis of data;

c) Writing original and review articles;

d) Preparation of scientific documentation.

5. Applicable Legislation and Regulations:

The call for applications and the respective award of the studentship are governed by the provisions of the University of Porto's Research Studentship Regulations - approved by Regulation no. 184/2021, published in Diário da República, 2.ª Série, n. 43, 03rd March, hereinafter referred to as the Regulations no. 43, of 03rd March, hereinafter referred to as the Regulation; the legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions; the Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), approved by Decree-Law no. 4/2015, of 7th January; the Research Fellow Statute (EBI), approved by Law no. 40/2004, of 18th August, in the current wording published by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of 28th August and; other applicable rules.

6. Workplace:

The work plan will be developed at the Cardiovascular R&D Unit - UnIC, at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, and/or other locations necessary for implementation, under the scientific supervision of Doctor Carmen Dulce da Silveira Brás Silva and Doctor Rui Miguel da Costa Adão.

7. Duration:

The studentship will have a duration of 6 months, on an exclusive dedication basis, possibly renewable for equal periods up to the limit of the period of execution of the funding, which may not, in any case, last for more than one year, under the terms of Article 9(2) of the University of Porto's Research Grant Regulations - approved by Regulation no. 184/2021, published in Diário da República, Series 2, no. 43, of 3 March, amended by Deliberation (extract) no. 1301/2021, published in Diário da República, Series 2, no. 184, of 22 December).

8. Monthly maintenance allowance amount:

8.1. The monthly maintenance allowance for the studentship is 541,12 €, in according to the table of values of FCT, I.P. studentship s in Portugal (Annex I - Table of monthly maintenance allowances of the FCT I.P. Research Studentship Regulation) and Annex I of the University of Porto Research Studentship Regulation.

8.2. Payment will be made by FMUP by bank transfer. In addition to this allowance, the studentship holder will be covered by personal accident insurance.

8.3. The studentship holder can join the Voluntary Social Insurance Scheme (valid for a studentship contract of six months or more), which is optional (not compulsory) and the reimbursement corresponds to the 1st step of the contribution base.

10. Evaluation methods:

10.1 Curricular assessment (AC – abbreviation in Portuguese), which, if the jury deems it necessary, may be complemented by an interview (E – abbreviation in Portuguese) with the best-classified candidates in the AC, up to a maximum of three candidates. The final classification will be obtained on a scale from 0 to 20 points, by applying the following formula: 0.6 x AC + 0.4 x E. If there is no interview, the final classification will be the same as the classification obtained in the AC.

10.2 Curriculum assessment factors are:

a) Area and final graduation classification and its suitability for the project (30%):

- Life Sciences or Health degree in a non-preferential area with final classification between 15-16 – 0 points;

- Life Sciences or Health degree in a non-preferential area with final classification above 16 – 2 points;

- Life Sciences or Health degree in a preferential area with final classification between 15-16 – 3 points;

- Life Sciences or Health degree in a preferential area with final classification above 16 – 5 points.

b) Knowledge in basic research, in the cardiovascular area, preferably in the utilization of techniques of molecular and cellular biology (25%):

- Without experience in basic research – 0 points;

- Experience in basic research in another area rather than cardiovascular – 3 points;

- Experience in basic research in the cardiovascular area – 5 points.

c) Knowledge in statistical treatment and interpretation of data in the cardiovascular area (20%):

- Without – 0 points;

- With proficiency – 4 points.

d) Fluency in English (15%):

- No – 0 points;

- Level A – 1 point;

- Level B – 2 points;

- Level C – 3 points.

e) Publications in national or international journals in the cardiovascular field or presentations at scientific conferences in the cardiovascular field (10%):

- Without – 0 points;

- Yes, as coauthor in the cardiovascular area or first author in another area rather than cardiovascular –

1 point;

- Yes, as the first author in the cardiovascular area – 3 points.

10.3 The evaluation factors for the selection interview, if it is carried out, will be:

a) Specific knowledge for carrying out the work plan (50%):

- Mediocre – 0 points;

- Sufficient – 2 points;

- Good – 4 points;

- Very good – 8 points;

- Excellent – 10 points.

b) Attitude and availability (20%):

- Mediocre – 1 point;

- Sufficient – 2 points;

- Good – 3 points;

- Excellent – 4 points.

c) Expression capacity (15%):

- Sufficient – 1 point;

- Good – 2 points;

- Excellent – 3 points.

d) Motivation for the planned activities (15%):

- Sufficient – 1 point;

- Good – 2 points;

- Excellent – 3 points.

10.4. Candidates can ask the President of the Jury for authorization for their interview to be carried out via videoconference, stating the reasons for this purpose.

10.5. Absence from the interview phase of the selection process is equivalent to withdrawal from the application, with candidates being excluded from the application.

10.6. The Final Classification (CF) will be obtained by applying the following formula: CF = (0.6AC) + (0.4E).

10.7. This application is intended exclusively to fill the indicated position. In the event that no candidate demonstrates that they have the indicated profile to carry out the work plan described above within the scope of this project, the Jury reserves the right not to award the place in application.

11. Notification of results:

11.1. Applicants will be notified of the minutes relating to the application assessment phase(s) sent to them by email, to the address they provide for this purpose, with a receipt of delivery.

11.2. Notifications are made by email, under the terms of articles 112(1)(c) and 113(5) of the CPA.

11.3. Under the terms of article 121 et seq. of the CPA, once notified, candidates have 10 working days to comment in writing.

12. Submission of applications:

12.1. The candidates must be submitted by February 09th , 2024 (local time - Lisbon).

12.2. The candidates must be formalized using the online application submission system available on the FMUP website: https://sigarra.up.pt/fmup/pt/CNT_CAND_GERAL.CONCURSOS_LIST (Ref. 2024/17, no. 181).

12.3. The application must be accompanied by documents proving the conditions set out in this Notice, namely:

a) Copy of the certificate(s) of the required qualification(s);

b) Motivation letter;

c) Curriculum Vitae;

d) Declaration of eligibility (attached);

e) Declaration of honour (if applicable).

12.4. The candidates may also attach any other documents they feel are relevant to assessing their merit.

12.5. Failure to comply with the application submission deadline, failure to submit or late submission of the documents referred to in points a) to e) of paragraph 12.3. will result in the application being excluded.

12.6. The documents must be attached directly to the application message, without links to external platforms/disks. In order to ensure that all documents can be read, the preferred saving format is "Portable Document Format" (.pdf). The files must be labelled with the name and surname of the applicant and must not exceed 5 MB in total. These files can be compressed into .zip format.

12.7. The Jury may, whenever it deems it necessary, ask applicants to submit additional documents relating to the facts mentioned in the curriculum vitae submitted, setting a deadline for this, in the following terms:

a) the documentation referred to is not intended for the presentation of elements not mentioned in the curriculum vitae, nor for the addition of missing documents required by this Notice;

b) all applicants are informed that additional documentation has been requested.

13. Booking list:

A booking list will be drawn up on the basis of the final ranking list, which may be used in the event of the first-placed candidate withdrawing. The Faculty's highest authority reserves the right to call the next candidate, and so on, until the vacancy is filled. This reserve list may be used for a maximum period of 12 months from the date of publication of this Notice.

14.
