1 Research Grant Announcement (M/F)

Call open for applications for a research grant within the framework of project “CyChest - Gestão integrada do ciclo do castanheiro no Parque Natural de Montesinho”, funded by the Promove Programme through Fundação “La Caixa”, in collaboration with the BPI and Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), under the following conditions:

Scientific Area:  Chemical Engineering or related areas.

Admission requirements: Candidates who cumulatively meet the following requirements may apply for this grant:

Requirement 1:

  • To be a student enrolled in a master degree or integrated master or in an integrated master's program who has already completed the 180 credits corresponding to the first six curricular semesters in the area of Chemical Engineering, requirement to be proven at the time of signing the contract.

And

Requirement 2:

Hold a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or related area.

If the degree has been awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of the Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of august 16th, and any formalities established there must be fulfilled until the time of signing the contract. 

Activity Outline: The CyChest research project – Gestão integrada do ciclo do castanheiro no Parque Natural de Montesinho, focuses on the valorization of residues from chestnut production by extracting compounds with high added value from their residues. Specific job tasks include (a) the extraction of bioactives from chestnut residues; (b) the emulsions production; (c) the development of a cosmetic formulation.

Legislation and regulations:Law Nº. 40/2004, of 18th August, in its current wording (Statutes of Scientific Research Fellow), Regulation of Research Grants of Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, in force (https://www.fct.pt/financiamento/programas-de-financiamento/bolsas/ ) and Regulation of Research Grants of University of Porto -  Regulamento n.º 184/2021, de 03 de março.

Work place: The work will be developed at LSRE-LCM, Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), under the scientific supervision of Doctor Isabel Maria Duque Martins and Doctor Andreia Sofia Silva Ribeiro.

Grant duration: Initial duration of 6 months, with the predicted starting date in April 2024, on an exclusive basis eventually renewable but never exceeding the project duration.

If it is not possible to ensure the duration of 6 months estimated in the previous paragraph, this duration will be adjusted according to the end date of the project, and provided that the minimum duration of 3 consecutive months is guaranteed, in accordance with paragraph 3 of article 6 of the Research Grant Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P.

The eventual renewal of the scholarship will be carried out as determined in article 6 of the Research Grants Regulation of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P.

Stipend: The grant stipend amounts to 990,98€ according to the table of values of the grants awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the Country (https://www.fct.pt/financiamento/programas-de-financiamento/bolsas/ ).  The payment will be made by bank transfer.

Selection procedure:

The curricular evaluation (60%) of the candidates will be evaluated based on the merit of the candidate and the following factors will be assessed:

a) Academic training (bachelor in the area of Chemical Engineering 5 points; bachelor is related area – 2 points)

b) Bachelor’s final grade average: up to 15/20 – 5 points, 14/20 – 3 points; 13/20 – 2 points, others – 0 points;

c) Knowledge in emulsions, product formulation, rheology, protein design software, protein engineering, and enzyme engineering (maximum 5 points).

d) English language, to be verified through a motivation letter (up to 5 points)

The four best ranked candidates in the curricular evaluation, will be interviewed (40%) In the interview topics related with the work plan, experience, motivation and candidate’s CV will be discussed).

The final scores results from the sum of the curricular evaluation and the interview.

Processing of personal data - Information for applicants

The data may be shared temporarily with entities contracted by or collaborating with the U.Porto in the application of part or all of any of the selection methods of the selection process in question, to the extent necessary for this purpose. Within the scope of reporting on the implementation of the project in which this selection procedure is included (CyChest), the data of the selected candidates may also be shared with the organisations funding the project (FCT and La Caixa Foundation), to the extent strictly necessary.

7. Rights of the data subject
