A tender is open for the attribution of one Research Scholarship for a bachelor within the scope of the R&D Unit “Center for Mathematics and Applications” (CMA) (UI/297/2020), financed by “Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P.”/MCTES (FCT, I.P.) (ref. UIDB/00297/2020) through national funds (PIDDAC) (OE).

1. Work Plan:

It is intended that the scholarship holders will collaborate in the ongoing research activities at the CMA (https://novamath.fct.unl.pt ), namely regarding the following context: Machine learning is primary concerned with revealing data patterns and relationships, in an automatic way, learning from data. It makes use of statistical and probabilistic methods to create algorithms that learn directly from part of the data, that are used to train and evaluate models for their predictive performance. Compared to traditional statistical methods, that often rely on strong assumptions, it may perform better if data size is not a problem. Machine learning has been widely used for classification and forecasting, especially on the finance markets applications, health and lately on COVID-19 context. The goal of this work is to use and compare different machine learning forecast models for prediction, such as Regression Models, Classification, Clustering, Neural Networks, etc., using Portuguese COVID-19 data.

2. Workplace:

The work is to be carried out at the facilities of the Center for Mathematics and Applications (CMA), hosted at the Department of Mathematics, located in NOVA School of Science and Technology, NOVA University Lisbon (FCT NOVA), under the scientific supervision of the Professor Isabel Natário, being the entity contracting NOVA.id.FCT – Association for Innovation and Development of FCT.

3. Fellowship duration:

The duration of scholarship is three months starting in July of 2022. The scholarship is not renewable.

4. Application deadline and form of application submission:

A tender is open from the 01st to the 14th of July 2022.

Applications must be formalized, obligatorily, by sending the following documents written in Portuguese or English and, preferably, in PDF files:

a) Curriculum Vitae;

b) Motivation letter;

c) Copy of the Bachelor certificate;

d) Proof of enrolment in the academic year 2021/22, in the 2nd cycle of an integrated MSc course or in a MSc course of the NOVA School of Science and Technology, NOVA University Lisbon, being able to be replaced previously by a Declaration on honor;

e) Declaration on honor (according to the draft available here for download).
