Offer Description

A tender is open for the attribution of one Research Scholarship within the scope of the R&D project “Unveiling the signatures of convergent evolution in bee-associated microorganisms: a comparative multi-omics approach” (PTDC/BIA-EVL/0604/2021), funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P./MCTES (FCT, I.P.) through National resources (PIDDAC) (OE), under the following conditions:

1. Scientific Area:

Biological Sciences - Microbiology

2. Recipients profile/category:

Mandatory requirements: Can apply for this tender, candidatos who meet cumulatively the following three requirements:

Requirement 1: be enrolled in a doctorate, or in a non-academic degree course integrated in an educational project of a Higher Education Institution;

Requirement 2: have a Master’s degree in Biology, Microbiology or similar areas (the documents proving the ownership of academic degrees and diplomas, or the respective recognition when awarded by foreign higher education institutions, are exempted in the application phase for the support in question, being replaced by the candidate's declaration of honor);

Requirement 3: experience in laboratory work in the field of microbiology and/or molecular biology.

Preferred factors: Motivation for computational biology. Documented experience in fungal microbiology.

3. Work Plan:

The present proposal aims to elucidate important aspects of a unique case of convergent evolution in bee-associated floral yeasts and bacteria while contributing with valuable knowledge to outline microbiome-based strategies for the conservation of the bee population. In the context of this scholarship, various aspects of floral yeast metabolism will be studied, as well as their possible beneficial role in protecting bees against pathogens (bacteria and other fungi).

The work will consist in the following tasks:

- Construction of yeast mutants and subsequent phenotypic analyses using traditional microbiology techniques;

- Generation and computational analyses of genomics and transcriptomics data;

- Antagonistic bioassays towards bee pathogens using an extensive floral yeast collection.

The candidate will be integrated in a research team and will be partially supervised by a postdoctoral investigator that is currently working on the project.

4. Applicable legislation and regulations:

Law No. 40/2004, of August 18, amended and republished by Decree-Law No. 202/2012 of August 27 (Statute of the Scientific Research Fellow) and amended by Decree-Law No. 233/2012 of October 29, by Law No. 12/2013 of 29 January, by Decree-Law No. 89/2013, of 9 July and Decree-Law No. 123/2019, of 28 August; Regulation of Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., in force (https://files.dre.pt/2s/2019/12/241000000/0009100105.pdf ).
