CESPU PhD scholarships - PhD in Toxicology - 40th anniversary

IUCS announces that CESPU, Cooperative of Polytechnic and University Higher Education (CESPU), within the celebration of its 40th anniversary, has decided to award an international scholarship for the PhD in Toxicology in the academic year 2022-23, under the following terms:

Scholarship and PhD program covered: A call is open for the attribution of 1 (one) PhD scholarship for international students in the Toxicology

Duration and Activity Regime. The scholarship has an annual duration, starting in November 2022, eventually renewable up to a maximum of 4 years, on an exclusive basis. The activities will be developed at the R&D units of the University Institute of Health Sciences (IUCS), under the Doctoral Program in Toxicology, according to the CESPU Scholarship Regulation approved by the FCT, the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, IP (see CESPU Scholarship Regulation at https://www.cespu.pt/ensino/candidaturas/candidaturas/doutoramento/ ).

Object of Activity and Scientific Orientation. The work to be carried out will be in the area of health sciences. Research projects, as well as supervisors, will be defined by the Coordinating Committee of the Doctoral Program, according to the profile of the selected candidates.

Eligibility Criteria. Only candidates who:

i) Do not have Portuguese nationality;

ii) Are 30 years old or younger

iii) Are proficient in the English language

Admission Requirements.

i) The CESPU PhD scholarship is intended for applicant who is accepted in the 1st edition of the IUCS doctoral program in Toxicology, starting in 2022/2023 (see Notice 2022-2023 at candidaturas/doutoramento);

ii) Applicants must hold a Master’s Degree, in the field of Health Sciences, Biology and Chemistry; with a final average (Bachelor + Master), or final grade of Integrated Master, equal to or greater than 16 (numerical scale from 0 to 20). The required degrees must be formally completed until the end of the application submission period;

iii) Missing documents required in this call and/or incomplete information determines the ineligibility of the scholarship application.

Evaluation and selection criteria. Applicants will be selected for interview based on:

Curriculum evaluation (50%):

• Academic qualifications (20%)

• Experience in research projects (7,5%)

• Scientific production - publications and presentations in congresses and/or participation in patent development (12,5%)

• Letter of motivation (5%)

• Letters of reference (5%).

Interview (50):

The top 5 candidates in the curriculum evaluation will be invited for an interview.

The jury reserves the right not to award the scholarship if none of the candidates matches the desired profile, suitable for the research activities being carried out at IUCS.

Selection Committee. The Selection Committee will include members of the Coordinating Committee of the PhD program: Professor Vítor Seabra (Director of Pharmaceutical Sciences Department, Coordinator of the PhD program and President of the Jury), Professor José Alberto Duarte (Member of the Scientific Committee of the PhD program), and Professor Diana Dias da Silva (Member of the Scientific Committee of the PhD program). Other professors from the PhD program may integrate the jury.

Other professors from the PhD program and/or researchers from IUCS’ research units may be part of the jury. The jury has deliberative capacity with a minimum of two of the elements identified above.

Notification of results. Notification of the results will be made to the electronic address provided by the applicants.

Scholarship Coverage. CESPU Scholarship will provide the recipient with the following benefits:

• Monthly Stipend: 800 euros, as provided for in Annex III of the CESPU Scholarship Regulation, payment to

be made monthly by bank transfer;

• Exemption from doctoral fees and school insurance (does not include exemption from payment of registration/enrolment);

• Voluntary social insurance and personal accident insurance;

• One-time Installation and Travel allowance: 1200 euros

• One year Portuguese Language Course at CESPU

In case of failure in a year and/or course units, the respective charges will be paid by the scholarship holder.

The scholarships are awarded under the Research Fellowship Holder Statute (available at: https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/estatutobolseiro.phtml.en ), approved by Law no. 40/2004, in its updated version, and under Studentships and Fellowships of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology in force (available at: https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml ) and the CESPU Scholarship Regulation.

Application Submission Period. Applications for scholarships are made on the application form for the doctoral program.

The scholarship application documents are common to the application documents for the doctoral program.
