Offer Description

There is an open call for applications for a Research Grant (BII), in the scope of the project "MITE - Varroa and transmitted viruses: Monitoring of mutations and development of innovative molecular tools" supported by Programa Apícola Nacional 2023- 2027.
MITE aims to determine whether varroa populations in Portugal carry alleles that confer resistance
to pyrethroids and amitraz and to modernize the beekeeping sector by developing innovative
molecular tools that can be easily used in integrated pest management against varroosis and
concurrently against associated viruses such as DWV.

Applicants must:

1) be enrolled in a bachelor's or master's degree program in Biology, Biotechnology, genetics or related areas;
2) have experience in DNA extraction, primer development and PCR techniques;
3) be proficient in Portuguese and English.

This grant will have a duration of 3 months without the possibility of renewal.

The fellow will benefit from a grant of 601,12€ as per the table of remuneration of FCT,I.P..

The fellow will also benefit from personal accident insurance, and if not included in any social security protocol, may adhere to the Portuguese Social Security through the Seguro Social Voluntário (Voluntary Social Security), in the terms present inthePortuguese Código dos Regimes Contributivos do Sistema Previdencial de Segurança Social. The monthly grant will be paid by bank transfer.

Work Plan:

1) Support in the sampling and organization of Varroa destructor samples;
2) Primer development;
3) Extraction of Varroa destructor DNA;
4) Analysis of sequences obtained by Sanger sequencing;
5) Data analysis;
6) Support in writing material to disseminate the results.

 

Grant Goal:

Implement the first nationwide screening for mutations associated with Varroa destructor resistance to pyrethroids and amitraz.

Selection process

The selection methods to be used will be as follows:

1) Curriculum evaluation (20%)
2) Experience in molecular biology (30%)
3) Motivation letter (10%)
4) Interview (40%)

The jury will be composed by Doctor Dora Henrique (President of the Jury), Doctor Maria Alice Pinto, Doctor Joana Amaral and Doctor Ana Maria Villa Serrano.

The communications and the final results of the evaluation will be disclosed by email notification to the candidates.

If the decision to be taken is unfavourable to the granting of the requested scholarship, the candidates have a period of 10 working days, after the date of publication of the evaluation results, to express their opinion, if desired, in a prior hearing, under the terms provided for in the Code of the Administrative Procedure.

The jury may choose not to award the scholarship if the candidate's score is below 9.5 points.
Preference will be given to candidates interested in doctoral program enrolment.

 


Additional comments

Documents proving the ownership of academic degrees or diplomas, or enrollment in an academic degree or diploma, may be dispensed with during the aplication stage, being replaced by a declaration of honor by the candidate, although substantion of this condition is mandatory during the grant contracting stage.

Academic degrees obtained in foreign countries require recognition by a Portuguese Institutionin accordance with Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16th and Ordinance No. 33/2019, of
January 25th.Thepresentationof the recognition is mandatory for the signing of the contract.
