CALL FOR A POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP

Summary:

A call is open for a Postdoctoral Research Scholarship for candidates with a doctorate degree obtained less than three years in relation to the date of the present call, for conducting research activities within the project BIOJUST/BIODIVERSA with reference number DivProtect/0001/2021, at the Centre for Applied Ecology "Prof. Baeta Neves" (CEABN), School of Agriculture, University of Lisbon. The project is funded by the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT) and the European Program Biodiversa. The project aims to compare different case studies of payments for ecosystem services (PES) occurring in European countries, including Portugal, and South America and to evaluate the contribution of PES projects for the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services, and assess potential benefits of these PES for the local populations.

The hired post-doctoral researcher will have the following tasks:

  • Monitor the development of the project, which will imply participating in meetings, missions to the field and preparation of technical reports necessary for the good development of the project;
  • Collection of data, namely in the case study in Portugal, to assess biodiversity values and ecosystem services, covered by the case study in Portugal;
  • Analysis of the different studies and cases that encompass the project to assess similarities and differences in the approaches taken in each case study;
  • Preparation of a literature review summarizing the main approaches to payment for ecosystem services in the world, as well as the main biodiversity values and ecosystem services that are being covered

under the following conditions:

1.TYPE, DURATION OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS AND EXPECTED BEGINNING PERIOD OF THE SCHOLARSHIP

The tender is intended for the attribution of a postdoctoral research scholarship for a length time of 12 months, possibly renewable up to a maximum of 20 months, scheduled to start on March 15th .

2. WORK PLAN AND WORKPLACE:

The work plan will include monitoring the project with a view to its good development, which will include participation in team meetings, field missions, data collection, preparation of technical reports and collection and analysis of data necessary for the good execution of the project.

The research activities will be conducted at the Centre of Applied Ecology "Prof. Baeta Neves" (CEABN), School of Agriculture, University of Lisbon, under the scientific supervision of Prof. Miguel Nuno Bugalho.

3. SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS

Applications must be formalized, obligatorily, by sending an application letter, with the reference

 "Projecto_BIOJUST/BIODIVERSA_DivProtect/0001/2021 ", together with following documents: Curriculum Vitae, copy of certificate of qualifications, motivation letter for conducting this research, and other supporting documents considered relevant.

If the Doctoral degree has been granted by a foreign higher education institution, it will have to be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution by the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES, only in case of automatic recognition), under the terms of Decree-Law number 341/2007, of 12 October, regulated by Notice no. 227/2017 , of July 25 and updated by Decree-Law No. 66/2018, published in the Diário da República, 1st series, No. 157, of August 16, 2018. For more information on this, please consult the DGES portal (http://www.dges.gov.pt ).  The presentation of this document may be waived in the application, if replaced by an applicant's declaration of honour, stating that the candidate has completed the academic degree by the deadline for the application, and verification and validation of this condition at the contractual phase of the scholarship.

The application period will run from February 21st to March 5th, 2024.

4. SCHOLARSHIP RENEWAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Scholarships may be renewed for additional periods up to their maximum duration, provided that, at the renewal date, the conditions for the grant are verified, always depending on the request submitted, within 60 working days prior to the start date of the renewal, accompanied by the following documents: a) Detailed report of the research conducted, including the URL addresses of communications, publications and scientific creations resulting from the conducted research activity, if any; b) Statement of the supervisor on the documents referred to in the preceding paragraph; c) Work plan for the renewal period. D) Document proving the renewal of enrollment in the cycle of studies required for granting the scholarship, in scholarships associated with cycles of studies or courses that do not confer an academic degree, except when this has already been concluded.

5. SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

5.1 Required Education Level:

  • PhD degree obtained in less than 3 years in the scientific areas of forest and agricultural sciences, environmental sciences or related scientific areas.

5.2 Required Skills:

  • Experience in statistical data analysis (fluency on R or other statistical software);
  • Experience in writing scientific papers;
  • Ability to work with geographic information systems (fluency on QGIS or other) and to analyze spatial data;
  • Ease of speaking and writing in English;
  • Availability to travel in Portugal and abroad;
  • Driving license.

6. FUNDING AND SCHOLARSHIP COMPONENTS

The grant will be funded by FCT, within the scope of the project “Project BIOJUST/BIODIVERSA reference number DivProtect/0001/2021”

The monthly allowance is of 1.801,00 € plus the reimbursement of voluntary social insurance (applicable to scholarships lasting six months or more), according to the table of values of monthly allowances, set out in Annex I of Regulation No. 950/2019 (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_202… .).The payment will be made via bank transfer.

7. EVALUATION CRITERIA

The candidates will be ranked according to the evaluation of their Curriculum Vitae (CV) conducted by the evaluation committee. The committee members may decide to call for an interview the three better placed candidates after the CV evaluation. In the case of interview, and for the final ranking of the candidates, a weighting of 70% will be given to the CV assessment and of 30% to the evaluation of the interview.

9. DISCLOSURE OF RESULTS

Form of advertising/notification of results: The final results of the evaluation will be publicized, through a list ordered, alphabetically, by final grade, posted in a visible and public place of the School of Agriculture, University of Lisbon, with the candidate being approved notified via email.

10. TERMS AND PROCEDURES FOR PRIOR HEARING, CLAIM AND APPEAL

After communicating the provisional list of the evaluation results, the candidates with an unfavorable decision to the granting of the scholarship, will have a period of 10 working days to do, if they wish, their statements in a preliminary hearing of interested parties, pursuant to articles 121 and following of the Code of Administrative Procedure of the Portuguese Administration Law. The final decision will be rendered after the analysis of the statements presented during a prior hearing of interested parties.

11. SCHOLARSHIP AGREEMENT MODEL AND FINAL REPORTS

11.1 - The scholarship contract must include:

a) The identification of the scholarship holder and the scientific advisor or coordinator;

b) The identification of the host and financial entities;

c) The applicable legislation, Regulation No. 950/2019;

d) The plan of activities to be developed by the scholarship holder;

e) Indication of the duration and start date of the grant.

11. 2 - The scholarship contract will be made in writing and a copy will be sent to the Foundation for Science and Technology, IP for inclusion in the national register of scholarship holders.

11. 3 - The Scholarship Holder Status is automatically granted with the signing of the contract, always referring to the start date of the scholarship.

11.4 - The scholarship holder must submit to ISA, within 60 working days after the end of the scholarship, in electronic format, a final report of their activities containing the activities developed and results obtained, including communications, publications and scientific creations resulting from the developed activity, and respective URL addresses, accompanied by the opinion of the supervisors.
