Offer Description

A tender is open for one Research Initiation Grant (BII_MEDVAULTS) at NOVA University of Lisbon – School of Social Sciences and Humanities (CHAM – Centre for the Humanities), within the scope of the project  FCT UIDB/04666/2020, financed by national funds through FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC).

 

Work plan: The selected grant holder will be integrated into the project as researchers and will have to carry out the following tasks, under the scientific guidance and supervision of the project's principal investigator under the project “MedVaults - Mediterranean Network for Vernacular Vaulted Building Research” developed at CHAM – Centre for the Humanities:

 

1. Geometric modelling in BIM of types of vaults and buildings based on point clouds;

2. Experimental monitoring of hygrothermal conditions in different locations of buildings;

3. Numerical simulation of the thermal and energy performance of buildings;

4. Analysis and discussion of results;

5. Participation in science dissemination and communication activities within the scope of the project, including updating the website, producing content and collaborating in outreach initiatives to the general public;

6. Preparation of a bachelor's or master's dissertation on a theme within the scope and/or methodology of the project (vernacular houses; vaults, their constructive system, geometries and material characterization; 2D representation and 3D views; georeferencing; etc.), benefiting from all research materials collected and produced, whose guidance and/or co-guidance will be the responsibility of members of the project team.

 

Workplace: The work will be developed at CHAM – Centro de Humanidades at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in places with relevant information for the project and, eventually, in a teleworking regime, if there are restrictions on movement for reasons of public health.

 

Duration: The grant will last for 3 months, starting in April 2024, eventually renewable.

 

Required Documents: Applications must be formalised, obligatorily, and under penalty of exclusion, by email, with the following documents identified by the respective serial number in PDF format:

1. Curriculum Vitae;

2. Letter of Motivation up to 500 words;

3. Proof of enrollment, or a declaration under oath that you will enrol in a 1st cycle course (bachelor) or a 2nd cycle course (integrated master's or master's) in the scientific area of Civil Engineering;

4. If applicable, Certificate of Qualifications and/or Certificate of Succession of UCs of the course referred in 3., where the average classification is clearly stated;

5. Declaration under oath that does not exceed, with the conclusion of the scholarship contract in question, an accumulated period of one year in this type of scholarship, consecutive or interspersed.

 

In the case of academic degrees and higher education diplomas, awarded by non-Portuguese higher education institutions, it is necessary to present the recognition of these degrees obtained, in accordance with Decree-Law no. 33/2019, of 25 January; or, in the absence of recognition at the time of application, the declaration under oath that this recognition will be made before contracting the grant holder in case of being the selected candidate. It will be mandatory to present the recognition of foreign qualifications until the time of contracting the grant. Skills/Qualifications

Candidates must enrolled in a 1st cycle course (degree) or a 2nd cycle course (integrated master or master) in the scientific area of Civil Engineering, aiming to start your scientific training through integration in the R&D project, in compliance with the provisions of article 5 of the FCT Research Grant Regulation (Regulation no. 950/2019, of 16 December).

 

Candidates cannot exceed, with the conclusion of the grant contract in question, including possible renewals, an accumulated period of one year in this type of grant, consecutive or interspersed.

 

Although the recipients must be enrolled in a cycle of studies leading to the attribution of an academic degree, at the time of application it is not necessary for the candidate to have made such an enrolment, and proof of enrolment must be presented until the fellowship is contractualised. Candidates are only required to meet the requirements to enrol in the training offer. If there are candidates already enrolled (including attending a course), they compete on an equal footing with those who are not enrolled.

Specific Requirements

Preferred requirements are:

a) Experience of participating in research projects;

b) Good knowledge of BIM tools;

c) Good knowledge of building physics;

d Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research;

e) Good written and oral communication skills;

f) Attendance and/or approval of the teaching part of the 1st or 2nd cycle course, with a view to preparing a monograph for a degree or master's dissertation within the scope of the project.

Benefits

The monthly maintenance subsidy is € 541.12, according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by FCT for positions held in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_2023.pdf ).

To this amount is added the personal accident insurance, as well as the voluntary social insurance corresponding to the first scale of earnings mentioned in article 36 of Decree-Law no. 40/90, of 1 February, if the grant holder chooses it.

The payment will be made by bank transfer.


Eligibility criteria

In compliance with the provisions of article 5 of the FCT Research Grants Regulation (Regulation no. 950/2019, of 16 December), the following are mandatory eligibility criteria:

a) to be enrolled in a 1st cycle course (degree) or a 2nd cycle course (integrated master or master), aiming to start your scientific training through integration in the R&D project.


Selection process

The selection of candidates will be based on:

a) academic qualifications and curriculum vitae (60%);

b) letter of motivation (40%);

whose ratings will be valued on a scale of 0 (zero) to 20 (twenty) points.

 

In case of ties, the tied candidates will be ordered according to the scores assigned respectively to a), b) and c).

The jury reserves the right not to award the grants if it considers that none of the candidates has an adequate profile or if none of the candidates achieves at least 10 (ten) points in the final score (on a scale of 0 to 20).

Results: According to article 12 of the FCT Research Grants Regulation, the results of the evaluation will be published within 90 working days from the deadline for submission of applications, by sending of the provisional list ordered by the final grade obtained to all candidates, by email. The minutes of the selection process will be made available for public consultation. After communication of the provisional list of evaluation results, candidates have a period of 10 working days to comment, if they so wish, in a prior hearing of interested parties, under the terms of articles 121 and following of the Code of the Administrative Procedure. The final decision will be taken within a maximum period of 60 working days after the conclusion of the prior hearing of interested parties or the public consultation. A complaint may be lodged against the final decision within 15 working days, or an appeal may be lodged with the maximum executive body of the financing entity within 30 working days, both after the respective notification.
