Call for 1 (one) Scholarship holder under the project  PTDC/EMD-EMD/0980/2020 – CADS-FACT

INEGI - Instituto de Ciência e Inovação em Engenharia Mecânica e Engenharia Industrial announces the open call for one (1) Research Scholarship for a Master student with a BSc Degree in Engineering within the framework of the project “PTDC/EMD-EMD/0980/2020 – Coronary Artery Disease Numerical Simulation and Functional Assessment by Advanced Computed Tomography” funded by FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, under the following conditions:

Scientific areas: Mechanical Engineering; Informatics and Computing Engineering; Biomedical Engineering

Work Plan title: Development of computational methods for heart segmentation from dynamic imaging, for hemodynamic purposes

1. Grant duration and regime:

Duration of 12 months, starting in September 2022, eventually renewable. The granting of the scholarships does not generate or entitle a legal-labour relationship, it is exercised under an exclusive dedication regime, and the Scholarship holder is granted the Scholarship Holder Status, in accordance with the Regulation for Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., both in their current wording.

2. Work plan:

The work to be developed under this grant, developed in collaboration with the Cardiology Service of the Hospital Center of Vila Nova de Gaia/Espinho, EPE (CHVNGE), aims to contribute with a set of computational procedures and methods for processing, visualization and interactive analysis of cardiac perfusion from computed tomography (CTP) imaging data.

The medical team involved in this project are Prof. Dr. Nuno Bettencourt, Prof. Dr. Ricardo Ladeiras-Lopes, Dr. Nuno Dias Ferreira and Dr. Diogo Ferreira.

In this context, the work to be developed, following an iterative user-centered approach, includes, generically, the following phases:

  • Familiarization with recent literature and the work already developed by our research group about the method of CT image processing in Python;
  • Study and implementation of computational methods (machine learning) for the ventricular and coronary arteries segmentation;
  • Familiarization with current practices of cardiac perfusion analysis, namely those adopted by the CHVNGE Cardiology Service, and identification of the needs and motivations of healthcare professionals for the definition of requirements;
  • Study and implementation of computational methods for the determination of dynamic parameters of cardiac perfusion (such as transmural perfusion).
  • 3. Scientific supervision:

    Prof. Doutora Sónia Pinto; Doutor Samuel Silva.

    4. Academic Qualifications and Admission requirements:

    Mandatory requirements:

  • BSc Degree in Mechanical Engineering or others considered appropriate;
  • BSc Degree with an average of 13 or above, on the Portuguese classification scale;
  • Enrollment in the Master in Mechanical Engineering or others considered appropriate, of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), in the act of signing the contract;
  • Speaking, reading, writing, listening of Portuguese e English languages: High Priority, Very Good Level;
  • Knowledge in handling software and programming.
  • Preferred requirements:

  • Interest in clinical applicability, namely in Cardiology;
  • Applied knowledge of image processing and analysis methods, emphasizing the focus on medical imaging;
  • Knowledge of data and/or information visualization.
  • 5. Eligibility of candidates:

    Candidates shall meet the eligibility conditions provided for in article 9 of the FCT I.P, Research Scholarship Regulation.

    Academic degrees obtained in foreign countries shall be registered by a Portuguese institution, according to the DL 66/2018, of August 16th , and the Ordinance nr. 33/2019, of January 25th. It is mandatory to present the certificate to sign the contract.
