Summary:
A research position for one Research Grant (“Bolsa de Investigação“) is open at Instituto de Telecomunicações, in the area of Medical Microwave Imaging for Breast Cancer Detection, and in the scope of the Project MARES – Satellite-based microwave remote sensing for marine litter mapping. This project is funded by own funds.

Work Objectives:
The objective is to study new techniques to advance the quality and reliability of currently existing medical microwave imaging methods, accelerate the development of a practical device incorporating these methods, test it in lab environment with phantoms, and use it in clinical trials with actual patients in Portuguese hospitals.

Place of work:
The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações – Lisboa, under the supervision of Professor Carlos Fernandes.
Duration:
3 months, with the possibility of renewal (according to the regulations defined by FCT). Start date: March 16th, 2024 or soon thereafter.

Admission Requirements:
Research grants are intended:
- for students enrolled in a degree-conferring course to carry out R&D activities with the aim to consolidate their scientific training through the development of research work leading to the attainment of the respective academic degree or completion of the course (integrated or not in R&D projects).
- for students enrolled in courses that do not confer an academic degree but which are integrated in an educational project of a higher education institution and are developed in association or cooperation with one or several R&D units.

In what concerns the admission requirements for this research grant in particular:
- The candidate needs to prove that he/she has been accepted in a PhD program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Engineering in general;
- The candidate must present evidence of knowledge required for medical microwave imaging, namely electromagnetics, antennas, wave propagation, and inverse methods for image reconstruction from radar signals;
- Experience with full-wave electromagnetic solvers is a strong requirement;
- The candidate must have also lab experience with material electromagnetic characterization methods and procedures, as well as experience with automation of microwave measurements;
- Knowledge and experience with 3D printing is appreciated;
- The candidate must be fluent in oral and written English.
An interview may be part of the selection process if any clarification is needed regarding the fulfillment of previous requirements.

Benefits

Monthly salary:
1259,64€ according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by FCT for positions held in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_atu… ) and according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by Instituto de Telecomunicações.
The payment will be made by bank transfer.

Selection criteria:

    Curriculum vitae/Academic evaluation
  • C2 (50%)
    Suitability of the candidate's profile based on the relevant work experience to develop the activities described in the work plan
  • C3 (10%)
    Fluency in oral and written English

Each criteria, and the final classification F will be evaluated in a scale (0-20). The candidates will be ordered according to:
F = C1 x 40% + C2 x 50% + C3 x 10%
In case of a tie, the tied candidates will be ordered according to C1, then C2...
The Jury has the right to not admit any of the candidates that applied for this position whenever they consider that no candidate meets the minimum requirements for the position.
