Offer Description

The research area of this project is concentrated around the novel quasi-two-dimentional twisted van der Waals systems, such as twisted graphene-based multilayers and twisted transition metal dichalcogenides. In the very recent years those systems have gathered a significant amount of interest since they provide access to a variety of strongly correlated electron phenomena, which are: unconventional forms of superconductivity, exotic magnetic properties, Mott physics as well as topological features. The twist angle between the monoatomic sheets in van der Waals systems results in the creation of a moiré pattern with very narrow low energy bands, which points to a significant role of inter-electronic interactions. The major advantage of such a structure with respect to the previously known correlated systems is that the electron density can be easily tuned by using electronic gates, thus avoiding the disruptive effects of chemical doping. Moreover, the strength of correlations can be modified by changing the twist angle. Due to those features, it is believed that twisted van der Waals systems will allow to unlock the secrets of interacting-electron phenomena with unprecedented control and tunability. Moreover, the considered structures have a lot of potential when it comes to possible applications in modern superconducting electronics and quantum information technology. The proposed project focuses on the modeling of exotic states of matter in the twisted van der Waals systems with the inclusion of the strong electronic correlation effects. The particular emphasis is going to be placed on the theoretical description of the unconventional superconducting state and the analysis of the topological features.

The research will be carried out in the theory group of ACMiN AGH (https://acmin.agh.edu.pl/2021/06/theory-of-quantum-systems/ ). Both existing numerical software and self-prepared codes are going to be used. Direct access to the high performance computing cluster „TeraACMiN” is going to be provided as well as personal desktop and laptop.

The PhD student is going to become a part of a research team within the project "Unconventional superconductivity, topology and strong electronic correlations in the moiré superlattice systems" financed from the National Science Centre of Poland (NCN). Scholarship is about 1200 euro per month. Planned period of PhD project is 4 years.
