PhD position in liquid metal polymer composites at Faculty of Chemistry

Updated: 5 months ago
Deadline: 2023-12-01T00:00:00Z

Position within POLONEZ BIS grant, Marie Sklodowska-Curie COFUND at the University of Warsaw

Dr. Piotr Mocny invites applications for a PhD position within the field of liquid metal polymer composites. Gallium-based liquid metals (e.g. gallium-indium eutectic, Tm=15.5oC, EGaIn) provide high conductivity without compromising softness and stretchability. A challenge comes with control over their morphology within the materials, e.g. formation of electric tracks instead of isolated droplets or nanoparticles. This project will investigate their morphology using polymer-assisted self-assembly. Some aspects of the project will be carried out in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University, USA (Matyjaszewski Polymer Group and Soft Machines Lab of Prof. Carmel Majidi).

Tasks:

•Work toward gaining a PhD in liquid metal – based hybrid materials with impact on soft robotics and wearable electronics

•Explore dynamic properties of liquid metals and their accessible morphologies within materials

•Apply novel photomediated ATRP techniques to prepare polymer matrices and modify commercially available materials

•Build simple devices (e.g.: sensor, triboelectric generator, etc.)

Requirements:

•Laboratory skills (chemistry, physicochemical analysis, e.g.: polymerizations, NMR, FTIR, DSC)

•Excellent English skills (to present orally and write manuscripts for scientific publication)

•High motivation and strong commitment to research

Offer:

•The opportunity to live in a dynamic and vibrant international city of Warsaw with rich history

•Interdisciplinary environment and excellent facilities of the new laboratories of Biological and Chemical Research Centre of the University of Warsaw

•Stipend of 5000 PLN/month until 30.09.2025 with the possibility of extension

•Possibility for cooperation with foreign research centers, such as Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) or Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL)

List of required documents:

•CV, transcript the grades/credits received

•Motivation letter

•Recommendation letter

Along with the required documents, please submit (or send a scan) a signed consent to the processing of personal data available at www.chem.uw.edu.pl/oferty-pracy (bottom of the page: "Klauzula informacyjna RODO").
