About the position

A three-year PhD fellowship is available at the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture, Nord University (Bodø, Norway) from October 1st. 2022.

FBA invites applications from outstanding candidates for a three-year PhD fellowship to explore ways of combating antimicrobial resistance in farmed fish. 

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an emerging global public health threat and food fish are increasingly becoming major transmitters to humans. This project aims to develop a control strategy to ensure that fish foods are free of AMR by reprogramming the metabolism of farmed fish.

The PhD candidate will work in a cross-group multidisciplinary team to characterize AMR genes using in vitro bacteria culture methods and identify nutrient metabolites essential for the AMR reversal. The reprogramming of host metabolism for the reversal of AMR using the identified nutrient metabolites will be verified in the zebrafish model. The PhD candidate also can work in collaboration with scientists at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Ås, Norway and Sun Yat-sen University of Life Science, Guangzhou, China.

The position is to be located in Bodø.


Qualification requirements
  • At the time of taking up the appointment, the candidate should have completed an MSc degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, as Biosciences, Molecular Biology or Microbiology. The grades at the qualifying MS examination needs to be B or better (ECTS scale from A-E)
  • The education (Bachelor’s and MSc degree) must be equivalent to the five years Norwegian degree program with 120 credits at the MSc degree level

  • Strong background in bacteriology on bacterial species infecting fish. Experience in conducting fish experiments
  • Analytical skills and good knowledge about research methods relevant to the proposed project
  • Proficiency in oral and written English is essential and knowledge of a Scandinavian language is beneficial for the position
  • The candidate should fulfill the admission requirements and participate in the training component stipulated in regulations of the PhD program

The annual salary for doctoral researchers (code 1017) is set at wage level 54, LR 20, NOK 491 200,- in the Norwegian State Salary Scale.
