About the position
The School of Landscape Architecture, Faculty of Landscape and Society at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant 3-year PhD–position within the field of Geodesign.
We invite applicants to submit proposals within the research field of Geodesign, focusing on the integration of geographic information systems (GIS), computer-aided-design (CAD), 3D modeling and interactive visualization (e.g. VR) for landscape design projects. We are currently preparing research on the topic ‘contested landscapes and territory’, and we would like to encourage applicants to consider this thematic framework for their project proposal.
The PhD study is expected to contribute to the incorporation of GIS into landscape design and urban planning research and project work. The candidate is supposed to develop pragmatic methods and workflows that will help to connect landscape project work to global data in a self-evident way. Concurrently, the respective methods and workflows must be suitable for the generation of aesthetically attractive and sophisticated design output (i.e. affinity to ‘design thinking’ is indispensable). The faculty aims for multi-disciplinary collaboration of researchers, educators, and professionals who are dealing with GIS applications in the fields of design and planning. Therefore, applicants with both, landscape specialization and interdisciplinarity, as part of their education are especially encouraged to apply.
It is expected that the appointed candidate is admitted to the PhD programme in Society, Development and Planning. The PhD programme consists of mandatory and elective courses with oral and written examinations and a major research component.
The successful candidate is expected to enter a plan for the progress of the work towards a PhD degree during the first months of the appointment, with a view to completing a doctorate within the PhD scholarship period.

Required Academic qualifications
- an academically relevant education corresponding to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are at master's degree level.
- documented proficiency in both written and oral English (IELTS 7.0 or equivalent)
The following experiences and skills will be emphasized:
- Relevant academic fields include – but are not limited to geodesign, landscape architecture, architecture, urban planning, geography, data-science, or information technology.
- Candidates who have completed a master's degree within another relevant discipline, and feature relevant work or research experience in the context of large-sized design projects or similar assignments, are also invited to apply.
- Competence in a Scandinavian language is desirable
Required personal skills
- Distinguished skills and knowledge in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), advanced digital technology, and applied design
- Ability to operate in multidisciplinary contexts
- Affinity to ‘design thinking’
Remuneration and information
The position is placed in government pay scale position code 1017 PhD Fellow. PhD Fellows are normally placed in pay grade 54 (NOK 479.600,-) on the Norwegian Government salary scale upon employment and follow ordinary meriting regulations.
Employment is conducted according to national guidelines for University and Technical College PhD scholars.

Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their academic qualifications, the quality of the draft research proposal and previous research as well as other relevant experience.

A shortlist of applicants will be called for an interview as a part of the evaluation. Applicants invited for an interview are expected to present original diplomas and certificates.
The Faculty has 1300 students, 60 PhD candidates and 180 staff. It consists of five sub-units, carrying out research and education in the fields of urban and regional planning, property management and law, landscape architecture, international environment and development studies, and public health.
The faculty runs two PhD programmes:
- Society, Development and Planning
- International Environment and Development Studies
The School of Landscape Architecture has 45 staff, 8 PhD students and 300 students. The School was the first landscape architecture programme in Europe and celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2019. This is Norway’s main academic institution for education and research in the field of landscape architecture.
The school is organized in five research groups; Landscape and community planning, Green space management and landscape plants (FUGE), Landscape design and construction, Landscape theory and history, and 3D visualization. The School hosts the Historical Archive of Norwegian Landscape Architecture, the Centre for Landscape Democracy (CLaD), The Norwegian Landscape Laboratory and the Virtual Reality Laboratory.
