About the job

The faculty of Architecture and Design, NTNU, is looking for committed, curious and ambitious candidates who want to take a PhD in architecture or design. The period of employment is three years, with the possibility of a fourth year related to teaching or other relevant assignments.

The need for transition increases in line with the growing complexity of societal challenges. This applies to issues such as the climate crisis and loss of natural diversity, increasing social and economic inequalities, migration, demographic changes and public health. Ability to change is closely linked to innovation and creativity.

Applicants are invited to present a research proposal on how architecture and/or design practice engages in societal change and sustainable transition of cities and communities. We call for proposals that focus on the development of creative and critical methods approaching complex societal challenges. The research should explore how architecture and/or design may be drivers for change. It should contribute to further positioning of the AD faculty within a potential future interdisciplinary program at NTNU level on creative methods and approaches to innovation (NTNU Create). The PhD programmes at the faculty opens for diverse methodological approaches, included practice-based research .

The proposal should describe how interdisciplinary perspectives may be included, considering ongoing research activities at the faculty. As part of developing the project proposal, applicants must create a connection to a relevant research field and identify a potential supervisor / contact person within the faculty. The proposal should preferably also show a relation to future strategic research areas at NTNU (e.g. Health, Energy or Community).

The candidate will report to the head of the respective department.


Duties of the position

The main goal of the position is competence building and doctoral education, and you  will be enrolled in the PhD programme in Architecure or the PhD programme in Design .  

You  will:

  • develop and carry out a research project  
  • carry out coursework that contains professional and methodological training at doctoral level  
  • present own research work at national and international scientific conferences  
  • write and defend a PhD dissertation  

The faculty of Architecture and design conducts research at a high international level. As part of this, contact with international research institutions is important. It is therefore desirable that the candidate spends at least 3 months at an institution abroad during the employment period.


Required selection criteria

You must:

  • hold a master’s degree or other equivalent degree, where 120 credits have been obtained at master's level in architecture, design or a related, relevant field. The degree must be completed within the application deadline 
  • meet the requirements for admission to the doctoral program in architecture or design  (See § 6-1).
  • present a maximum 5-page project description where you present the outline of the research project. The outline should  
  • describe the main project idea, background and research questions
  • express a clear understanding of the theoretical foundation and the research methods that are intended to be used in the project 
  • include a project plan
  • identify which of the departments at the faculty the project is intended to be linked to provide information about scientific staff member(s) who have agreed to be your supervisor(s) 
  • present a track record of relevant publications and other activities relevant for their field (exhibitions, projects etc.) 
  • have good oral and written communication skills in English

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant 


Preferred selection criteria
  • Experience from international work
  • Good written and oral Norwegian or Scandinavian language skills
  • Project management or project development experience

We are looking for a highly motivated, quality oriented, conscientious, creative and independent scientist. You should enjoy interdisciplinary research and be a team player with good communication skills. A self-driven, structured and proactive attitude will be central for this position.

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 501 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years, with the possibility of a fourth year related to teaching or other relevant assignments.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Architecture  or the PhD programme in Design  within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants , and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

You must therefore ensure that your application clearly demonstrates how your skills and experience fulfil the criteria specified above.

  • Motivation letter with an emphasis on providing relevance to the proposed tasks
  • Project proposal including a research plan (maximum 5 pages).
  • Name of contact person at the relevant department who have agreed to supervise the project
  • A CV with information on education, previous research and practice experience and publications together with authorized documentation of certificates and study records
  • Name and address of three referees

If all, or parts, of your education has been taken abroad, we also ask you to attach documentation of the scope and quality of your entire education, both bachelor's and master's education, in addition to other higher education. We will take joint work into account. If it is difficult to identify your efforts in the joint work, you must enclose a short description of your participation.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates.
