This is NTNU
At NTNU, creating knowledge for a better world is the vision that unites our 7 000 employees and 40 000 students.
We are looking for dedicated employees to join us.
About the position
A PhD position is available at the Center of Quantum Spintronics which is part of the Department of Physics, NTNU in Trondheim, Norway.
The candidates will join and become part of an international research environment in quantum condensed matter theory and experiments.
The PhD position has a duration of three years with the possibility of up to one year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the department.
QuSpin carries out research in theoretical as well as experimental fields. QuSpin`s pricipal goal is to describe, characterize, and develop recently identified quantum approaches to control electric signals, conceotually different from those existing today.
QuSpin, a Center of Excellence, is funded by the Research Council of Norway. QuSpin is managed by a Center Director, a center coordinator and has four principal investigators. See http://www.ntnu.edu/quspin.
QuSpin currently has 6 professors, 3 associate professors, 20 PhD students and 10 postdoctoral researchers from 12 different nations working on various aspects of low-dissipation spintronics.
For further inquiries and information, please contact the QuSpin Center Director, professor Arne Brataas at firstname.lastname@example.org
Main duties and responsibilities
At QuSpin, our theory activity focuses on developing models for the utilization of spins and other quantum degrees of freedom in magnetic insulators, topological insulators, and superconductors.
The candidate will contribute to these developments with a particular focus on ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic materials.
The aim is to develop a new or improved understanding of spin transport, spin dynamics, and spin-induced electron correlations in novel nanostructured hybrid systems. Such insight can assist in developing new spintronics concepts where only spins flow, but no electric charges can move or in creating systems where electrons acquire radical new behaviours.
The applicant for the PhD position must have an MSc (or equivalent) in physics or nanotechnology or a closely related field. We require a solid background in condenses matter theory or related theoretical areas in physics or nanotechnology. We will not consider candidates with a PhD degree for the PhD positions. It is an advantage if the candidates can document a background that is particulary relevant for onegoing research projects at QuSpin.
The reguations for PhD progrms at NTNU staye that a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passin grades (A best) for the two last years of the MSc is required. Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, wich describes in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree. http://ec.europa.eu/education/resources/diploma-supplement_en
The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Such evidence might be represented by the results of standars tests such as TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificat in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). The candidate`s language skills might also be assessed in a personal interview.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant
NTNU is committed to following evaluation criteria for research quality according to The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment - DORA.
The candidate should actively contribute in teams. Personal skills like a positive and friendly attitude, and contributing to a sustainable social environment will also be valued.
Salary and conditions
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is three years with the possibility of up to one year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the Department. Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme.
As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
A good work environment is characterized by diversity. We encourage qualified candidates to apply, regardless of their gender, functional capacity or cultural background. Under the Freedom of Information Act (offentleglova), information about the applicant may be made public even if the applicant has requested not to have their name entered on the list of applicants.
