PhD position

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Dentistry (IKO), a PhD position (100 %) is available for a period of three (3) years. The position is linked to the large collaborative projects financed by Olav Thon Foundation, Norway. The project is titled “Let`s make bone – 3D printing as a tool for bone regeneration”. The position is funded by The University of Bergen.



About the project/work tasks:

The position is allocated to the projects aimed for development of bioinks that can be used in bone tissue engineering. The main objective of the project is to engineer a 3D printed composite scaffolds that could contain bioprinted stem cells as bioinks for functional bone regeneration.

Specific aims are:

  • Use 3D Printing Technology (3DP) to produce implantable scaffolds with optimal composition and geometry for bone regeneration.
  • Use 3D Bioprinting (3DBP) methods to mimic structural and cellular composition of bone.
  • Study if 3DP-3DBP hybrid structures could be used to facilitate bone regeneration by combining benefits from both technologies, i.e. mechanical strength of 3DP scaffolds and cellular organization and bioactivity provided by 3DBP.
  • Compare in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo results for generation of reliable methods for studying bone regeneration and predicting scaffold performance.


Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • The applicant must hold a master`s degree or equivalent in Dentistry or Medecine
  • Experience from relevant research projects will be considered as positive and favoured
  • Applicants with a background in polymer synthesis and stem cell cultures are highly preferable
  • Research skills and competence and experience from similar projects will be considered
  • The applicant must be fluent in oral and written English
  • Applicant whose education is from another country than Norway, need to also attach a certified translation of the diploma and transcript of grades to English or a Scandinavian language, if the original is not in any of these languages. It is required that the applicant enclose a review from NOKUT whether the education (bachelor and master degree) in question is of a scope and level that corresponds to the level of a Norwegian master’s degree. About the PhD position (applies to university PhD positions):

Organized research training (PhD program): The candidate must take part in the University of Bergen approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. You must have admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the Faculty in order to qualify for the position. Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.

The PhD-position: PhD-positions are fixed term positions. You cannot be employed in a PhD-position for more than one fixed term pperiod at the same institution or have had similar employment at an institution in the region.

Further increases in salary will be based on seniority in the position. For applicants with at least one year of employment in a position as a General Practitioner or Dentist, salary level 56 NKR 507 600. Medical specialist starts on wage level 59 NKR 534 400
