About the position

This PhD Candidate position is part of the recently started research project: “ZeroKyst KSP  – Decarbonising the fisheries and aquaculture industry through hydrogen-electric propulsion” (ZeroKyst KSP) that aims at accelerating the transition towards a climate neutral fisheries and aquaculture industry. The development of technologies and competence will enable the large-scale introduction of zero-emission fishing and utility vessels along the Norwegian coastline.

ZeroKyst KSP is part of the industry-led Green Platform main project ZeroKyst that has the primary objective of accelerating the decarbonization of the fisheries and aquaculture industry through developing accessible zero-emission vessel concepts and associated infrastructure. ZeroKyst KSP supports the main project by feeding competence, models and technologies into the demonstration activities of the main project and by analyzing the potential impact of upscaling the technologies.

Replacing the existing fleet in the fisheries and aquaculture industries with zero-emission vessels will require considerable investments in the new fleet and associated infrastructure. In addition, zero-emission fuels may affect the future operations of the vessels. The PhD position will actively develop a quantitative framework for determining and analyzing the optimal strategy for phasing in zero-emission technology to ensure that national emission reduction goals are achieved.

The framework will combine methods and models from mathematical optimization, e.g. for optimal fleet renewal, with economic methods and concepts, e.g. incentive schemes, to create managerial insights for both private and public decision makers regarding which technologies to invest in and when as well as which policies and regulations might be needed to enable and accelerate the transition.
