Offer Description

About the job

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

We apply for a PhD candidate on the topic One Health connected to Mission Mjøsa, which is a recently started large-scale project lead by NTNU and Innlandet county in partnerships with municipalities around Mjøsa (Norway’s largest lake) and several governmental agencies. By crossing disciplinary (including, but not limited to technology, natural science, social science, humanities, economy and health) and sectorial lines Mission Mjøsa aims to facilitate sustainable use of Mjøsa as an ecosystem while at the same time maintaining the ecosystem’s structure, function, productivity, socially critical infrastructure and natural diversity.

The project consists of 6 research streams: water, humans, technology, history surroundings, and a digital twin, which will connect data from other research streams across time and space.

The current PhD project is embedded in the research stream humans, which takes its point of departure from the Mjøsa ecosystem, of which humans are a central part both as a species in interaction with animals and nature, but also as an actor – as a citizen, tourist, worker, researcher, administrator or as a member of an interest organisation.

In this ecosystem, all species and actors will influence each other, be dependent on, or have an interest in Mjøsa, to varying degrees. This includes everything from plant and animal life, the local population, the municipality, leisure and fishing organisations, agriculture, as well as research and management organizations that monitor water quality.

All species affect their natural surroundings or habitat. However, humans stand out because their ecological footprint is not naturally limited. Technological development, capitalist economy, strong business interests and a high consumption culture contribute to increasing exploitation of nature. By studying a sustainable management of Mjøsa in the interaction between nature and culture, society, technology and science, the project aims to provide knowledge of both local and global significance.

The interaction between the water and the people in the Mjøsa region is closely related, and neither public health, animal health, fish health, water health or food health can be understood in isolation.

The PhD project should therefore apply a One Health approach, which was originally developed by the World Health Organization, as an integrated, unifying approach to balance and optimize the health of people, animals and the environment. This approach should guide the project in providing evidence to support an equitable, sustainable, and integrated health and well-being for humans, non-humans, and habitats. Based on an in-depth local study on the sustainable use of the Mjøsa ecosystem, the project therefore has the potential to increase our understanding of how we can achieve sustainable ecosystems in other parts of the world as well.

The PhD-position is a temporary position for a period of three years.

The position is also connected to the research of CHAIN (Centre for Global Health Inequalities Research). For more information about CHAIN,see: https://www.ntnu.edu/chain
