About the job
At Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering we have a vacency for a PhD Candidate in Modelling of Loss of Containment Consequences of Hydrogen Technologies. Insufficient knowledge about safety issues related to widespread roll-out of hydrogen technology represents a major bottleneck for industry. It is of key importance for the future hydrogen society to safely manage hydrogen and avoid accidental releases.
As a PhD candidate in this position you will have the opportunity to be involved in different Norwegian and European research projects. You will analyse the consequences of hydrogen loss of containment in different industrial applications (e.g. glass) as well as in public areas during storage and transfer operations. The accident scenarios consider hydrogen under different conditions (pressure and temperature), and both compressed gaseous and liquid hydrogen should be investigated. You will be responsible of developing and validating theoretical and numerical thermo- and fluid-dynamic models (e.g. computational fluid dynamics, CFD). For these activities, the candidate will have the chance to use data from experimental tests on hydrogen loss of containment consequences (e.g. release, fire and explosion) conducted during relevant research projects. The outcome of the consequence analysis will be then exploited to carry out a complete risk analysis. Finally, you are requested to propose the selection of ad-hoc preventive and mitigative safety barriers for the hydrogen loss of containment. This will aim to enabling safe application of hydrogen storage and transfer technologies.
For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.
Your immediate leader is Associate Professor Federico Ustolin.
