About the job

In 2022, approximately 500 tonnes of Saccharina latissima and Alaria esculenta were cultivated in Norway, with expectations of exponential growth in the production in the upcoming years, potentially reaching several million tonnes. This projected expansion depends upon the development of markets and technology.

Currently, there is an open PhD position available within the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science, closely linked to the multidisciplinary project SusFF: Sustainable food and feed, at SINTEF Industry. The primary objective of this PhD-project is the development of innovative food products derived from cultivated seaweed.

One of the key challenges limiting the broader utilisation of cultivated seaweed for food is its relatively low nutritional value and occasional high concentration of non-essential minerals. The appointed candidate will use novel technologies tailored to cultivated seaweed to introduce essential nutrients and other health-promoting components, while simultaneously reducing the presence of non-essential, potentially harmful minerals. These nutritionally enhanced seaweeds will be integrated into generic food products, with consideration given to taste, texture and overall nutritional quality after processing.

The project will further explore the potential for microbial fermentation of seaweed using food-grade fungi. This investigation will focus on yield and nutritional composition to further enhance the suitability of seaweed as a sustainable food and ingredients source.

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

Your immediate leader is  Associate Professor Ida-Johanne Jensen.

Duties of the position

The candidate is expected to:

  • Take part in the project work actively, such as planning of research designs, and harvesting of raw materials
  • Use novel technology to introduce essential nutrients and reduce non-essential minerals to the raw materials to increase nutritional value and food safety
  • Evaluating nutritional quality and chemical food safety of raw materials and tailored food products
  • Contribute to product development by incorporating seaweeds into different food products, focusing on taste and texture
  • Actively disseminate results within the project, the scientific group and to the society overall

Required selection criteria
  • Master’s degree in Food Science, Microbial Biotechnology, Bioprocess Technology or a related field
  • Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
  • Master's students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented by 30.01.2024.
  • You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program (PhD Education )
  • Practical and analytical skills within food technology, bioprocessing, food chemistry
  • Good written and oral English skills

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant

  • Research experience within food technology or bioprocessing,
  • Competence within Food Chemistry, Sensory Science, Food processing, Microbial Biotechnology and Bioprocessing, Product development
  • Knowledge about food microbiology, nutrition, food safety
  • Good written and oral Norwegian skills

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200,- per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years with the possibility of 1 year extension due to teaching duties. The PhD should start no later than 1st April, 2024.
Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Biotechnology (PhD in Biotechnology ) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants , and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
