About the position

The position is part of the project "Enhancing healthcare services' capability of understanding and identifying risk of frailty in older adults". The overall aim of the project is to provide health services with new knowledge about preventive factors related to the use of advanced health services such as municipal long-term care and hospital emergency admissions. To achieve this, the PhD candidate will use statistical analysis to examine the relationship between physical activity level and frailty in adulthood and use of municipal services such as home care and admission to nursing home in older age. In addition, the PhD candidate will investigate whether receiving municipal services reduces the probability of admission to a nursing home and emergency hospital admissions. The study involves linking HUNT (https://www.ntnu.no/hunt ) with several central and local health registers.

The project is a collaboration between NTNU and the National Institute of Public Health. The main supervisor, associate professor Linn Beate Strand  and co-supervisor Professor Sigrid Nakrem , will be located at NTNU, Trondheim and co-supervisor senior scientist Bjørn Heine Strand  will be located at the National Institute of Public Health, Oslo.

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.  


Duties of the position
  • The project will include statistical analysis of register data and self-reported data
  • The PhD candidate is expected to write manuscripts for three scientific publications that will be included in the doctoral thesis
  • Relevant and compulsory PhD courses must be completed
  • The project's findings will be presented at national and / or international conferences
  • The project will suit a highly motivated student with an interest in working with statistical analysis

Required selection criteria
  • Professionally relevant background in in nursing or other relevant health science, like for instance master's degree in epidemiology or public health  
  • Education correspondent to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
  • A strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education
  • You must meet the requirements for admission to the facultys doctoral program : https://www.ntnu.edu/mh/phd
  • Good oral and written English

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants  and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant  


Preferred selection criteria
  • Experience in analysing quantitative data
  • Experience of working with population data
  • Experience with Stata or R for statistical analyses
  • Good oral and written Norwegian

Personal characteristics
  • Good collaboration and communication skills
  • Documented ability to work independently and ability to collaborate interdisciplinary

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential as a researcher will also count in the assessment of the candidates.

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 491 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in medicine and health sciense (https://www.ntnu.edu/mh/phd ) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution, NTNU, daily.
