Tenure: The scholarship is for one year of full-time study (120 points) or pro-rata for two years of part-time study (minimum of 60 points per year). Recipients of this scholarship are not eligible to apply for the scholarship again.
The award was established in recognition of AUT’s contribution to the Deaf community through training and education connected to NZSL users. The scholarship is funded by a gift from the JR McKenzie Trust Deaf Development Fund, which was founded by philanthropist Sir Roy McKenzie.
To encourage and enable persons who are deaf and use NZ Sign Language to achieve a tertiary qualification by studying at Auckland University of Technology.
- 1. Applicants to have a hearing loss of 70 DB or more in better ear (i.e. severely deaf). 2. The scholarship is open to students enrolling in the second or subsequent year of a Bachelor’s degree, or enrolling in a Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate degree programme. 3. Applicants must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
How do students apply?
Application for this scholarship is on-line through the AUT scholarships portal from October. Applicants will be asked to upload: 1. Academic transcripts for any tertiary study completed at any institution other than AUT. 2. A personal statement (max 600 words) explaining what you plan to study, any future academic or career goals, and why you believe you should receive this scholarship. Involvement in extra-curricular activities and participation in the Deaf community will be of interest to the panel. 3. A copy of your most recent audiogram or other professional verification of your hearing loss.
Applications will be considered by an AUT selection panel including a representative from the NZ Sign Language programme. The decision of the selection panel is final.
How and when do students learn of the decision?
Applicants will be formally notified of the outcome of their application by the Scholarships Office. If the panel is of the opinion that there is no applicant of sufficient merit applying for the scholarship, then no award will be made and applications may be reopened.
What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
The award of this scholarship is conditional on the student being enrolled in an eligible programme at AUT. A minimum of 60 points per year must be undertaken if studying part-time.
