The prize was established in 2008 and is financed by a donation from the family of the late Richard Paul Anschutz, who was Professor of Philosophy from 1956-1961. In 2019 a generous donation from David Aro, grandson of Richard Anschutz, endowed the prize in his grandfather’s memory.

The purpose of the Prize is to encourage study in political philosophy at the University of Auckland.
