History or background of award
The late Henry McDowell Smith F.N.Z.I.A. practised architecture in Dunedin and Invercargill during the whole of his professional life. His widow provided in her will for the establishment of a scholarship to assist architectural students from Otago to pursue their architectural studies

Purpose of award
The main purpose of the scholarship is not to reward academic brilliance but to provide assistance where, for any reason, lack of finance is likely to prevent or inhibit a student from completing the architectural course.

Selection criteria
Open to full time students enrolled in a BAS and whom are from the Otago/Southland provincial area.

One year.
