NIWA is a dynamic research organisation and New Zealand's largest and pre-eminent provider of climate, freshwater and marine science. Our core purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand's aquatic resources and environments, to provide an understanding of climate and the atmosphere, and increase resilience to weather and climate hazards to improve safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders.
What we're looking for:
We are seeking a Post-Doctoral Fellow to further develop the New Zealand Earth System Model (NZESM). In collaboration with domestic and international partners, you will advance the representation of linkages between clouds and aerosols and possibly other climate-composition linkages in the model. The position will involve analysing observational data, casting understanding of these data into process-level formulations and implementing these into the atmosphere component of the NZESM. Over the next two years you will work alongside a team of specialists with expertise in climate dynamics, climate physics, atmospheric chemistry, and ocean dynamics. There are strong linkages with international partners with whom you can expect to interact.
What you will bring:
- PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant aspect of Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Climatology, Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics
- A track record of research in Physical Sciences
- A high level of computer literacy including familiarity with programming languages (esp. FORTRAN, Python), with experience in statistical data analysis beneficial
- Experience with the Unified Model would be particularly valuable
- A proven ability to work in a team environment, to develop positive working relationships, and to be adaptable, focused, well-organised, and solution-oriented
We encourage junior to mid-career scientists to apply. This position will be based in Wellington, New Zealand, and will involve occasional domestic and/or international travel. NIWA offers competitive remuneration and benefits, as well as an attractive waterfront location.
We don't expect perfection in our candidates - if you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every point referenced in the position description, please still get in touch!
NIWA offers flexible working options (e.g., part-time, flexible start and finish times). We are happy to discuss potential flexible options for this position at the interview stage.
NIWA promotes the importance and value of an inclusive and diverse workforce, including the Rainbow Community, and takes pride on being a family-friendly and supportive workplace.
Providing a safe working environment for our people is paramount to us and that is why we have implemented a COVID-19 Vaccinated Workplace Policy, which requires all new employees and contractors to be fully vaccinated, where medically able, before joining our team.
