This scholarship was generously funded by friends of Annette Black to encourage and support students to pursue postgraduate study in History at Victoria University of Wellington.


History

This scholarship has been generously funded by friends of Annette Black in her honour and memory. Annette was a student at Victoria University of Wellington completing a BA (Hons) in History in 1965 and an MA thesis in History in 1970 (‘Nineteenth-century society and the reform of the endowed grammar schools, 1805-1874’). She later returned to study and completed a Diploma of Educational Studies in 1975 and an MBA in 1990. Annette had a highly successful career serving in several prominent roles for the New Zealand Law Society. She was recognised for her work promoting legal education in 2015 when she was named as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.


Eligibility

Applicants for this scholarship must be enrolled, or be intending to enrol, in a Master’s thesis in History at Victoria University of Wellington. Selection will be based on academic merit. If there are candidates of equal merit, preference may be given to an applicant’s originating from outside major urban areas.

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled or intending to enrol in a full-time Master's by Thesis at Victoria University of Wellington.
  • Applicants must be majoring in History.

Selection process

The successful recipient will be selected by the Programme Director of History (or their nominee) in consultation with the Head of School and other appropriate academic staff.


Additional information

The scholarship will first pay tuition fees and levies, and the remainder of the scholarship to be paid as a monthly stipend.

The successful recipient will be asked to write a letter of thanks to the donor at the outset of their scholarship. They will also be asked to, at the end of their study, provide the abstract of their thesis to the donor summarising their work.


Regulations and conditions

  • All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full-time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full-time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  • The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  • The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
  • Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  • Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  • At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
