Two PhD or PostDoc Positions on Climate and Acoustic Impacts of Disruptive Aircraft Engine Technologies

The aviation industry has been growing rapidly until the COVID-19 pandemic. The ICAO Post-COVID-19 forecasts indicate that aviation will recover with a growth rate ranging from 2.4%-4.1% for a low to a high scenario, respectively. Air traffic growth inevitably causes an increase in aviation's combustion and noise emissions, hence aggravating aviation's environmental and societal impacts locally and globally. Depending on your seniority, you will conduct research into the climate or acoustic impact (respectively) of disruptive aircraft engine technologies as a PhD candidate or a postdoctoral researcher working in the Horiozon Europe HOPE (Hydrogen Optimised Multi-Fuel Propulsion System for Clean and Silent Aircraft). The goals for each of the two positions are:

  • Climate: You will further develop the open-source climate model for evaluating multi-fuel aircraft engine technology. The feedback of which will be incorporated in engine design.
  • Acoustic: You will perform aeroacoustic wind-tunnel experiments to study the noise emissions of novel aircraft technologies, such as boundary layer ingestion systems. These findings will be essential to develop noise prediction models that can help estimating the acoustic impact of these technologies around airports.

Yours being interdisciplinary research, you will regularly discuss and align your work with the European project partners, which include aerospace faculties, aviation research institutes, and engine manufacturers. Coaching bachelor and master students and supervising their projects is also part of your role. As a PhD candidate, you will receive all the training you need to develop yourself, while in the Postdoc position you will be preparing for your academic career and take on a more leading role in education, project coordination, and developing project proposals. The Aircraft Noise and Climate Effects group will be your homebase. You will be joining our highly motivated, friendly and supportive team of three Professors, three assistant Professors, two Postdocs and more than twenty PhD students. Ours is an open-minded, inspiring, and friendly atmosphere, in which you will be sharing ideas and knowledge. You thrive on developing complex mathematical models and analysing simulations that will demonstrably advance sustainable aircraft engine design. And you enjoy mentoring and interacting with students, while growing your own skills and expertise.

You also have:

  • An MSc (for the PhD position) or a PhD (for the Postdoc position) in a relevant subject, such as atmospheric sciences, (applied) physics, (applied) chemistry, aerospace engineering, acoustics, or mathematics.
  • Excellent mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Experience with experimental work and signal processing are beneficial for the acoustic position.
  • Advanced programming skills.
  • A keen interest in interdisciplinary research.
  • An excellent command of English, as you’ll be working in an internationally diverse community and with international partners.

For the PhD: 

Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1.5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2.5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2,541 per month in the first year to € 3,247 in the fourth year. As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School.
