Tenure-track position Bio-inspired information processing with spiking neurons

Updated: about 19 hours ago

Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam invites talented researchers to apply for a Tenure-track position in the area of Bio-inspired information processing with spiking neurons.

Job description

The machine learning group studies how computer programs can learn from and understand data, and then make useful predictions based on it. These algorithms integrate insights from various fields, including statistics, artificial intelligence and neuroscience. One focus of the group lies at the interface of neuroscience and AI, the study of how networks of neurons in the brain process information, and how this inspires the development of novel neural networks. Neuromorphic computing is developing as a broad interpretation of how biological neural processing principles can be harnessed for novel and/or efficient means of neural computation, including principles and algorithms compatible with hardware implementations. The group is involved in multiple national and international efforts, including the Human Brain Project (SGA3) on neurocognitive modelling, the statistics of privacy preserving healthcare in an NWO COMMIT2Data project, and a recently awarded NWO NWA ORC project on Acting Under Uncertainty.

The candidate would strengthen existing research lines and establish new ones in the broad theme of neuromorphic computing.

You are a talented scientist with a PhD degree and expertise in a most broadly defined interpretation of neuromorphic computing, including spiking neural networks, event-based processing, - local and/or continual learning methods and neuromorphic sensing and processing.

You have a track record of innovative research and publications in leading international journals and conference proceedings in Machine Learning and/or Computational Neuroscience. You have a clear vision about your research and are willing to develop acquisition skills. You also have demonstrable communication skills and enjoy developing (intern-)national collaborations. For supervising PhD’s, you know how to motivate and encourage students.

Terms and conditions

The tenure track position is for three or five years, depending on knowledge and experience of the candidate. At the end of a successful tenure track term, a permanent scientific staff position will be offered. Criteria for evaluation comprise a list of publications that is well above average, a demonstrated ability to acquire funding, supervise post docs/PhD students and other researchers in training, and to build an (inter)national network and reputation. The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres ("CAO-onderzoeksinstellingen"). Depending on relevant work experience, the gross monthly starting salary for an employee on a full-time basis ranges from € 3,831 to € 5,269. Employees are also entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8,33%. CWI offers attractive working conditions, including flexible scheduling and help with housing for expat employees.
