An opening is available in the Macromolecules and Interactomics group, headed by Dr. John LaCava. The European Research Institute for the Biology of Ageing (ERIBA) is a newly established institute at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). The central theme at the ERIBA is the molecular mechanism of (cellular) ageing. We aim to identify physiological and molecular changes that can explain the loss of cells and functional decline of cells and tissues with age. For this, we make use of state-of-the-art technology and a variety of model organisms. Furthermore, we heavily invest in Systems Biology to integrate our findings within the scope of various models and mechanisms of ageing that have been proposed. The ERIBA is housed in a brand-new building and part of the central UMCG campus in central Groningen, a small (200,000 inhabitants) but vibrant city (with over 25,000 students) in the north of the Netherlands.

Job description

Our protein interactomics projects rely upon immunoprecipitation and quantitative mass spectrometry using both metabolic labeling and label-free approaches. Some key examples of related prior work can be view at:

At present we are also increasingly moving towards integrated proteogenomic studies in patient tissues – with an initial focus on LINE-1 retrotransposon contributions to the biology of cancer and ageing. Our group is motivated to continue to succeed in tool and assay development at the cutting-edge of biomedical discovery. The successful candidate will join ongoing projects to expand our mass spectrometry-based interactome studies as well as help us to open new research using mass photometry - a new method of weighing single molecules in-solution using microscope optics.

For mass spectrometry, we are procuring a new instrument dedicated to the requirements of our research (expected to be installed winter 2019); in the meantime we also have access to extensive additional infrastructure available at the UMCG Interfaculty Mass Spectrometry Center ( ). Prior experience in MS-based proteomics is a requirement for this position (see below).
For mass photometry, we have a research and development collaboration with Refeyn Ltd ( ) and expect to install the new instrument in the fall 2019. No prior experience in this new technology is required; the successful applicant will receive on the job training by Refeyn’s applications specialists. The successful applicant will leverage this instrument to develop a range of assays characterizing the properties of immunoprecipitated samples.

We have dedicated bioinformatics staff, in-lab, to support data analysis stemming from these projects. This position also includes the possibility of short stays conducting research at The Rockefeller University in New York City.

What do we need

The Postdoc will be part of a young and enthusiastic research group and should meet the following requirements:

  • Required education/skills: PhD in Molecular/Medical Biology, Analytical Chemistry, or related-field

  • Expertise in high performance LC-MS/MS for shotgun proteomics is an absolute requirement

  • Applications from candidates with prior post-doctoral experience are encouraged and will be prioritized

  • Candidates that also possess experience with SRM/PRM, crosslinking/MS, proximity labeling (BioID/APEX2), and/or DIA, will receive advantaged consideration

  • Should be highly organized and motivated to take on project leadership responsibilities, enthusiastic and ambitious.

  • Collaborative, communication and networking skills are mandatory

  • Good knowledge of English

The UMCG has a preventive Hepatitis B policy. The UMCG can provide you with the vaccination, should it be required for your position.

What do we offer

Your salary will be a maximum of € 4.481,- gross per month (scale 10), depending on your qualifications and relevant experience, based on a full-time appointment.
In addition, the UMCG will offer you 8% holiday pay and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
The terms of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for Medical Centers (CAO-UMC).

Employment basis:1,0 fte = 36 hours/week, temporary for specified period. The duration of the initial contract will be two years with the possibility of extension for an additional two years, contingent upon performance and available funding.
