Department Biomedical Sciences of Cells & Systems (BSCS)
Work location Groningen
Apply no later than 31 August 2021
Working environment
The research at the Department of Biomedical Sciences of Cells & Systems (BSCS) at the UMC Groningen focusses on understanding basic functions and processes of the cell & systems and how they lead to diseases if disturbed. The Department strives for identification and, if possible, exploitation of targets to prevent or cure disease, and to promote Healthy Aging. The position will part of an ZonMW-funded project on “Beta cell stress and the exocrine pancreas: A cause/ consequence relationship?” coordinated by dr. B. N.G. Giepmans. In the laboratory of dr. Giepmans advanced microscopic techniques are implemented to help to understand how molecular mechanisms lead to diseases, with a focus on the Islets of Langerhans malfunction in Type 1 diabetes.
Job description
The trigger for Type 1 diabetes is not known, but evidence is emerging that suggests that the complete pancreas is affected in Type 1. The project addresses if anomalies in the exocrine pancreas may lead to beta cell stress. Key is to do this in a cause/ consequence approach using advanced microscopic tools and the zebrafish larvae as a model. This project is part of a ZonMW OPEN project of Dr Ben Giepmans (UMC Groningen), Dr Elizabeth Carroll (TU Delft) and Dr Arnaud Zaldumbide (LUMC). In addition to the Psost-doc position in Groningen, a PhD-student position on this project is open in Leiden/ Delft.
