Join the Leadership and Management section of the Amsterdam Business School  at the University of Amsterdam  (UvA) for a fully-funded PhD position to conduct impactful leader and followership research, together with internationally renowned experts. We are seeking an ambitious and enthusiastic PhD candidate to join us on September 1st, 2024.

You'll study the often underestimated influence followers hold over their leaders. Explore the symbiotic connection between leaders and followers, dissecting their shared impact on the leadership process. Utilize a mix of quantitative (field and experimental) and qualitative research methods to delve deep into this dynamic relationship.

What are you going to do?

Your role involves collaborating on research, recruiting participants, collecting data, conducting in-depth data analysis, and sharing your research findings with both colleagues and the public. You'll present your discoveries at workshops and conferences, and participate in collaborative symposia. Your contributions will be published in prestigious journals, shaping discussions in our field. Additionally, you'll contribute to teaching at the Amsterdam Business School, enhancing the academic environment.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Develop innovative research ideas;
  • conduct research (including the design of the studies, and the collection and analysis of empirical data);
  • write up findings for publication in prestigious academic (leadership and management) journals;
  • present research findings at leading international conferences;
  • attend courses and seminars to develop research skills;
  • participate in and contribute to research activities within the section (e.g., research seminars);
  • contribute to teaching activities of the section (e.g., conduct tutorials) and supervise thesis students (20 percent of the task).

You will be working as a PHD candidate for 38 hours per week.

Your advisory team will include Professor Annebel de Hoogh and Professor Deanne Den Hartog (promotors). What do we require?

  • Master’s or Research Master’s degree in in the area of business (business studies, business administration, management, HRM) or applied psychology (work and organizational psychology) with excellent grades and a demonstrable interest in the area of organizational behavior and/or human resources management;
  • the ability to work systematically and project-oriented;
  • strong analytical skills;
  • experience with quantitative research and advanced statistical methods;
  • excellent oral and written communication skills in English;
  • a proactive mindset and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.

Our offer

We offer an employment contract for 38 hours a week with an initial period of 18 months, and after an intermediate evaluation after 18 months there is the possibility to extend it for 30 months (in total the contract will be for four years), preferably starting from September 1st, 2024. The end-result should be a PhD thesis. An educational plan will be drafted that includes attendance of courses and (international) conferences.

The gross monthly salary will range between € 2,770,- in the first year to  € 3,539,- in the last year for full-time employment (38 hours per week), excluding holiday allowance (8%) and year-end bonus (8.3%). The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable.
