Job description

Since its founding in 2016, John Stuart Mill College of VU Amsterdam offers an international bachelor programme in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE). The PPE programme (www.vu.nl/ppe) is a joint initiative of three faculties of VU Amsterdam. We are seeking candidates for a PhD candidate/junior lecturer. You teach seminars within the College, play an active role in the PPE community, and conduct research that results in a PhD dissertation supervised by a member of staff from the Political Science and Public Administration Department of the VU. The position involves 50% teaching and 50% research time. Your focus is on politics, with the interdisciplinary scope that is characteristic for PPE. Besides, as a PhD candidate at VU, you are an employee with full employment benefits.

Your duties
•    you support senior teaching staff by leading small group seminars
•    you play an active role in the John Stuart Mill College’s social and intellectual life
•    you are involved in student supervision
•    you complete a PhD dissertation in politics on a topic that falls within the interdisciplinary scope of PPE


Requirements

•    a completed (research) master degree in either politics or an interdisciplinary programme combining PPE disciplines. Politics was the core focus of your master’s thesis

•    excellent research and writing skills

•    excellent command of the English language

•    you can work in an interdisciplinary and multicultural environment

•    you can work in a team as well as independently

•    you are willing to actively contribute to the community life of the John Stuart Mill College


What are we offering?

The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel and amounts € 2.443 (PhD) per month during the first year and increases to € 3,122 (PhD) per month during the fourth year, based on a full-time employment. The job profile is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for 1 FTE.

The initial appointment will be for 1 year. If the evaluation is satisfactory, the contract will be extended for 3 years in the first instance and then for another 2 years. The total contract duration will be 6 years. The starting date will preferably be September 1, 2022.
