The Department of Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy at the University of Groningen invites applications for three fully funded PhD position in the field of philosophy. They will be part of the VICI project of Prof. Lisa Herzog on “Working Democracy,” funded by the Dutch Science Organization (NWO). The description of the envisaged PhD projects can be found here:

Candidates should indicate which of these projects they would be most interested in and what specific background knowledge, skills, and idea they bring for it (or they can indicate openness to work on any of the three projects).

We are looking for candidates who have finished, or are close to finishing, a Master’s degree in philosophy (or a Master degree in a related field and some experience in philosophy) and who are enthusiastic about combining philosophical and empirical approaches and have a demonstrable affinity with the topics. Additionally, candidates should have:
- a strong motivation for doing a PhD and demonstrable time management and organizational skills
- experience in, or at least affinity with, interdisciplinary research between philosophy and the social sciences; experience in qualitative social research is a plus
- a demonstrable capacity to cooperate with various research partners inside and outside the university
- excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:
- a gross salary of € 2,770 gross per month in the first year to a maximum of € 3,539 gross per month in the final year (salary scale PhD), based on a full-time position (1.0 FTE)
- a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income and a 8.3% year-end bonus
- a position for four years (full time). Each successful candidate will first be offered a temporary position of one year with the option of renewal for another three years. Prolongation of the contract is contingent on sufficient progress in the first year to indicate that a successful completion of the PhD thesis within the contract period is to be expected.
- a PhD training programme is part of the agreement and the successful candidates will be enrolled in the Graduate School of the Faculty.
Successful candidates are expected to move to Groningen.
Proposed start date for the PhD positions is September 1, 2024.
