Offer Description
The Wadden Sea is an immensely important hub for migratory birds that use this area to spend the winter or for fuelling during migration. Being “one of the last remaining large-scale, intertidal ecosystems where natural processes continue to function largely undisturbed”, the area was declared an UNESCO world heritage site. Several management measures are undertaken to restore or strengthen the natural values of the Wadden Sea, while some old and new threats are acting. The project Waakvogels aims to better understand the effects of management measures in the Wadden Sea by studying the demographics and movements of six migratory bird species, each being characteristic for a specific habitat.
Within this consortium, we now have a vacancy for the PhD project “Brent geese in the Wadden Sea fuelling for migration to Siberia”. This is a temporary appointment for 4 years. Starting date is as soon as possible, possibly 1 March 2024.
The impact of habitat changes will be studied by investigating the carry-over effects of conditions met in the Wadden Sea to survival and reproduction. Individual brent geese will be tracked using advanced transmitters. Their habitat use of polder, saltmarsh and seagrass beds will be quantified, and coupled to their departure date, departure weight and reproductive success upon return from the breeding grounds.
The primary working location will be the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) in Wageningen. Since the research is being conducted in close co-operation with the Department of Theoretical and Computational Ecology of the University of Amsterdam, the candidate is expected to spend one working day a week (preferably the Monday) at the Science Park. Additionally, the consortium will likely meet regularly at BirdEyes in Leeuwarden. Most field work will take place at the Wadden Sea islands.
