Job description
We are looking to fill a four-year PhD position in virology at the department of Viroscience Project
Title: Characterization of fusion inhibitory peptides against COVID-19.
Respiratory virus infections are omnipresent, affecting global health and economy. Studies into antiviral treatments against these respiratory virus infections are essential. The most recent example underlining this importance is the COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2. Together with collaborators in the US, we have designed specific antiviral peptides that can interfere with the fusion between viral membrane and cell membrane, thereby preventing virus infections of cells. In initial proof-of-concept studies, we have shown that these fusion inhibitory peptides can prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection in vitro, and SARS-CoV-2 transmission in animal models. However, improvements to these fusion inhibitory peptides need to be made with regards to (1) solubility, (2) toxicity, (3) stability, and (4) biodistribution, before implementation in a clinical product (like a nasal spray) is likely. In this project, the PhD candidate will help with the design of these improved peptides, and will design and perform experiments to study their functionality in vitro and in vivo. In these studies, the candidate will use a plethora of state-of-the-art techniques, including (primary) cell culture, flow cytometry, comprehensive data-set analysis, multicolor confocal microscopy, immunological assays, and virus culture and animal experiments in a biosafety level (BSL)-3 environment.
