PhD Student in neuron-glia imaging - NIN-KNAW - Amsterdam

Updated: 2 months ago
Job Type: Temporary
Deadline: 01 Sep 2020

This position is to investigate the mechanisms of myelin pathology.

Project description:
One of the hallmarks of multiple sclerosis (MS) is the degradation of the myelin sheath, a complex and poorly understood process which is driven by diverse cell types including neurons, glia and immune cells.

Microglia are immune cells that form the first line of defence and involved in both the degradation of the myelin sheath but also recovery and are currently an emerging cell type in the field of neuroscience. A deeper understanding of MS lesions requires to visualize these processes live and longitudinally and examine the basic interactions between neurons and glia.

Using a state-of-the-art microscopy infrastructure, you will develop and apply the next generation of activity-based chemical probes to study inflammatory brain lesion in preclinical models of MS.
