PhD student in Immunology and metabolomics (1.0 FTE)

Job description We are looking for a PhD student in experimental immunology, with an interest in immunological research on dendritic cell function and metabolomics in health and disease.
In chronic autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) current treatment offer symptomatic relief, but do not cure the disease. Next-generation therapeutic strategies aim at curing RA by restoring the disrupted immune balance. Cell therapy using autologous antigen-loaded tolerogenic dendritic cells (tolDC) is the leading approach. We are currently testing their safety and immunological efficacy in a first-in-man phase I/IIa clinical trial in RA patients. Despite these advances, it remains unclear what exactly confers therapeutic tolDC their tolerogenic functionality. Within this project we want to understand the interplay between metabolic pathways used by tolDC and the relation to functional potency in health and disease.

Qualifications We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated PhD candidate, who is interested in undertaking an interdisciplinary project at the interface of immunology, Metabolism and Metabolomics. You are intrinsically motivated for scientific research and discovery and a team player, who is enthusiastic to bridge research between the Broere and Berkers groups. You are in possession of:
  • a degree (MSc) in biomedical sciences at the interface of cell biology and immunology or equivalent;
  • preferably a demonstrated experience in mass spectrometric techniques like metabolomics and/or immunometabolism;
  • good technical skills;
  • a hands-on attitude, and the ability to work independently;
  • self-initiative and you are eager to learn;
  • a high level of verbal and written communication skills in English.

Offer

We offer a temporary position (1.0 FTE) for one year in an international working environment. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranges between €2,395 and €3,061 (scale P according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment.
