Offer Description

The integration of medical artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical care is paired with pressing ethical questions about its roles and responsibilities. Collaboration between physicians and medical AI systems is frequently promoted in the academic literature as the best way forward to achieve the expected benefits of medical AI. Yet, without a clear understanding of human-AI collaboration, patient care faces sincere risks such as blurred responsibilities, unresolved disagreements or inefficient care. Collaboration can take different forms: AI can serve as an equal (partnership), take

over tasks that it can do more accurately (substitute), or assist the physician (assistant)? These types of collaboration differ in morally significant ways: Partnerships are successful under different conditions and impose different ethical norms than substitution or assistance.

As human-AI collaboration will not be completely analogous to human-human collaboration, a refined understanding of collaboration in this context, as well as the conditions and norms for realizing the expected benefits of medical AI must be established. As a PhD Candidate, you will conduct ethical-empirical research and normative research into human-AI collaboration in medicine. You will write a PhD thesis (based on scientific publications) and follow courses at the Graduate School of Life Sciences and/or Philosophy; you will also teach Medical Ethics and Medical Humanities courses at the Faculty of Medicine
