Offer Description

Every time a cell divides it faces the formidable task of copying the 3 billion bases of our genome. The replication machinery faces many hurdles during this process. DNA damage is one of these hurdles, however, it turns out that the DNA molecule itself can form alternative structures that also form prevalent roadblocks for the DNA replication machinery. These structures can cause genome instability when not properly regulated and have been linked to neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. In this project we will use a powerful biochemical system, the Xenopus egg extract system, to define mechanisms that resolve these non-canonical DNA structures to maintain genome integrity. The PhD student will work in a highly collaborative and ambitious environment, with access to top-class facilities.
