PhD student: High-throughput Electron Microscopy Development

About the program:

Developing new pharmaceuticals, understanding how cancer cells respond to chemotherapy, or building ever more powerful computer chips – all this, and more, requires imaging at the smallest possible scales. Within the national research programs NEXTGEN HighTech and 3DNI we develop technology for super-fast 3D imaging of atoms, molecules, and cells. To achieve this goal, we engineer novel light and electron microscopy technology. Combining these with computer algorithms and artificial intelligence unveils details smaller than the wavelength used for microscopy.

The position:

Do you want to pursue a PhD with impact on science and society? We develop new technology to revolutionize our capabilities in microscopy, realizing super-fast 3D nanoscale imaging. We collaborate with partners in industry and in biomedical sciences to apply our technology and knowledge in relevant problems and products for broad implementation. And we are now looking for a PhD candidate to work at the intersection of imaging physics, nanotechnology, biology and AI, in close collaboration with other students and researchers in our collaborative research programs.

Contrary to traditional single-beam electron microscopes, our new FAST-EM microscope operates with 64 beams in parallel achieving unprecedented acquisition speed. This gives us the possibility to image entire cells, tissues, and organs, at the highest possible resolution in 3D, zooming in and out like in Google Maps. In this project, we will further optimize the FAST-EM detector and image acquisition to allow for even faster imaging and correlation with other microscopy techniques. We will apply our technology to high-resolution and super-fast 3D imaging of models for brain diseases and cancer.

Your role:

The primary goal of this research is to optimize the FAST-EM detector for faster and multi-modal image acquisition. You will develop a practical model for signal generation and detection in the FAST-EM detector and use this model to further optimize the detector layout. Together with our support staff and commercial partners, you will realize the optimized detectors, demonstrate their improved performance, and apply these in the 3D imaging of cancer organoids samples provided by our academic partners. You will be part of a national multidisciplinary consortium (Delft University of Technology (TUD), UMC Groningen (UMCG), UMC Utrecht (UMCU), commercial partners Delmic and Technolution, and contribute to the development of innovative solutions for high-throughput multi-beam electron microscopy.

  • Master's degree in (applied) physics, engineering, imaging science, or a related field
  • Strong knowledge on (electron) optics and solid-state physics
  • Keen interest in electron and correlated microscopy and life science applications
  • Knowledge of imaging techniques
  • Familiarity with computer simulations and modelling.
  • Effortless English communication skills, both spoken and written
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and analytical thinking
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with interdisciplinary team members

Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis. Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in the form of 2 employment contracts. After 1 year there will be an official go/no go progress assessment, followed by an additional contract for the remaining 3 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2770 per month in the first year to € 3539 in the fourth year.  As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School, providing an inspiring research and training environment with an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff and a mentor.
