Offer Description

Bolted ring flanges form the common connection between foundation and tower in offshore wind farms. Despite its the widespread use, there are still fundamental challenges such as the prevention of premature bolt failure. With the increasing size of wind turbines and hence ring flanges, they become so large that there is a lack of evidence of their structural performance. In addition, installation, maintenance become more complex. The fatigue performance of a bolted ring flange heavily relies on the quality of all elements of the connection. Measurement data gathered during installation can partially identify error sources and thereby assist in the structural reliability. Using finite element models of bolts and bolted ring flange connections, combining this with installation measurement and in-service inspection possibilities, and embedding this in a probabilistic framework, you will evaluate the system reliability of large ring flanges. You will validate your models with tests carried out by our partners. Comparing the evaluated reliability with its requirement, you will set the standard for installation and production tolerances of large ring flanges.

Requirements
Specific Requirements

You are experienced in the following three fields: 1) structural reliability (probabilistic) analysis; 2) finite element modelling; and 3) fatigue. You are able to analyse the mechanical behaviour of a complex system. You like cooperating with others and at the same time you take responsibility for your own work. You hold:

  • A master's degree (or an equivalent university degree) in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • A research-oriented attitude.
  • Proof that you fluently speak and write English (C1 level).
