PhD position on 'The historical development of gender occupational segmentation and stereotyping of medical specializations, 1950-2020' (1.0 FTE)
Job description
We are looking for a candidate for a PhD project titled 'The historical development of gender occupational segmentation and stereotyping of medical specializations, 1950-2020'. This project aims to determine the origins of occupational stereotypes in the medical profession in the Netherlands since the Second World War. It poses the question how and why these stereotypes change over time, and how they affect the majority gender share of occupations (i.e. the share of male and female workers within occupations) and the (self-)perceived status as well as the relative remuneration of men and women and the working culture within the medical sector. A detailed project description can be found here.
The project is part of a larger transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary research cluster on 'Differential Pathways to Gender-Inclusive labour markets' within the research programme SCOOP : Roadmaps to Resilient Societies. In total, three PhD students will be working in this project, in close collaboration with each other. For this particular project the first and daily supervisor will be from History and the second supervisor from Social and Organizational Psychology. SCOOP is a research and training centre dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of sustainable cooperation as a key feature of resilient societies. SCOOP brings together researchers of the University of Groningen, Utrecht University, VU Amsterdam, Erasmus University Rotterdam, and Radboud University Nijmegen. The PhD candidate will participate in the SCOOP PhD training programme .
Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate who has:
- (almost) finished a (Research) Master's in the domain of (economic) history, or a related discipline such as sociology;
- a solid training in historical and/or social science research (being familiar with both fields is a plus for this position);
- affinity with quantitative and qualitative research methods;
- (preferably) proven affinity and interest in the research field of gender (in)equality;
- eagerness to work in an interdisciplinary research team and to conduct interdisciplinary research in the SCOOP programme;
- proven academic research skills;
- eagerness to publish international articles and write a dissertation;
- excellent command of English and academic writing skills;
- (preferably) working Dutch language skills.
Offer
We offer an appointment (1.0 FTE) a period of 18 months. Upon a good performance and positive evaluation, the contract will be extended for the remaining period of 30 months (4 years in total). The gross salary starts with €2,395 per month in the first year and increases to €3,061 per month in the fourth year of employment (scale P according to the Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities) for a full-time employment.
Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. In addition, Utrecht University offers excellent secondary conditions, including an attractive retirement scheme, (partly paid) parental leave and flexible employment conditions (multiple choice model).
