Are you looking for a PhD position where you can contribute to improving the quality of Dutch education by researching the causes and promising solutions for the teacher shortage? Then this PhD position is interesting for you!
Job description

You will work as a PhD candidate within the Research Centre for Education and the Labour Market (ROA), one of the research departments of Maastricht University's School of Business and Economics (SBE). ROA has a leading position nationally and internationally in research in the field of education and the labour market. You will have access and contribute to ROA and SBE’s international network of renowned scholars, and you will also be part of the Graduate School of Business and Economics (GSBE) that coordinates SBE’s PhD programme.

As a PhD student at the Research Centre for Education and the Labour Market (ROA) of Maastricht University's School of Business and Economics (SBE), you will work with colleagues from the Education Lab NL on the research project: Teacher shortages, their effects on the quality of education and possible solutions to counteract them. You will explore the mechanisms underlying teacher shortages, and promising interventions that can be deployed to reduce them. The following questions are central to this research: What do we know about possible causes and consequences of teacher shortages in the Netherlands as well as in other countries? Which solutions are currently being deployed in schools and which of these are promising? Which interventions would be promising, in particular those aimed at HR policies, terms of employment and working conditions of teachers? What impact would these solutions have on the distribution of teacher shortages? Your research will involve both qualitative and quantitative research methods, with at least one study being a field experiment or vignette study.

We offer you a challenging, flexible job in an enthusiastic, ambitious, and driven team. You will be involved in applied experimental research in schools, as well as performing data analysis and writing scientific articles with colleagues. You will be part of the Education Lab NL, which is a dynamic and enthusiastic interdisciplinary team, and you will contribute to the quest for more effective education and more equal opportunities for students. The Education Lab NL is a research network of scientists, education professionals (teachers, school leaders) and policy makers. Education Lab NL aims to build bridges between science and educational practice, through applied research of scientific excellence. Education Lab NL has collaborations with several universities, schools, school boards, municipalities, the Inspectorate of Education, and civil society and international organizations (e.g., OECD, World Bank).

As a PhD, you will also be involved in teaching activities (e.g., teaching of tutor group meetings, MSc thesis supervision) at SBE.
