Full-title: PhD position (0,8-1.0 fte) in the SCOOP Program on “Diverse We Stand!” Organizational Leadership Diversity and Sustainable Value Creation in Periods of Crisis at the Department of Sociology of the University of Groningen.

We are seeking a candidate for a PhD project titled ““Diverse We Stand!” Organizational Leadership Diversity and Sustainable Value Creation in Periods of Crisis”. There are long-standing academic and public debates on the need for and benefits of diversity in organizational and economic power positions. This project contributes novel insights by investigating how diversity in directorates and boards of large firms (concerning, among others, gender, age, education, ethnicity, or former business experiences) impacts value creation for various stakeholders (such as investors, employees, and communities). Specifically, we aim to uncover the context dependencies of the diversity-value creation link, focusing on how the benefits or pitfalls of diverse leadership manifest during large-scale economic and societal crises that challenged many corporations in recent decades: the COVID19 pandemic and the Great Financial Crisis of 2008. The project combines insights from organizational and economic sociology, social and organizational psychology, and management using large-scale linked administrative registers on businesses and their leaders and employees. For more information on the project, see:

The project is part of the transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary research program SCOOP: Roadmaps to Resilient Societies (see: http://www.scoop-program.org ). SCOOP is a research and training center dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of sustainable cooperation as a key feature of resilient societies. SCOOP brings together researchers of the University of Groningen, Utrecht University, VU Amsterdam, Erasmus University Rotterdam, and Radboud University Nijmegen.

Aside from research commitments, the PhD candidate is expected to participate in the PhD training programs of both SCOOP and the ICS. More details about the SCOOP Training Program can be found here:
