The Department of Biomedical Engineering offers a research driven BME Bachelor program and Masters in Biomedical Engineering and Medical Engineering in its Graduate Program. Its research areas range from Molecular Bioengineering and Imaging, Biomechanics and Tissue Engineering to Biomedical Imaging and Modelling. The department has more than 800 students and up to 200 tenured and non-tenured employees.

About the BME Orthopaedic Biomechanics group:

This group combines the disciplines of engineering and biology to increase our knowledge of the adaptive, developmental and physiological nature of musculoskeletal tissues. This knowledge is then applied to explore and develop regenerative treatment strategies, currently applied to bone, articular cartilage, intervertebral disc and tendons/ligaments. The group consists of multi-disciplinary scientists and engineers at all levels employing numerical and experimental as well as engineering, imaging, biological and chemical techniques.

Importantly, this position will be seconded to the department Biohybrid & Medical Textiles of the Institut für Textiltechnik of RWTH Aachen University and much of the research will be supervised by Prof. Stefan Jockenhövel.

About the Dept. of Biohybrid & Medical Textiles (BioTex) at the Institut für Textiltechnik:

The transfaculty NRW Professorship in Biohybrid & Medical Textiles (BioTex) is a bridge professorship between the Institute for Applied Medical Engineering and the Institut für Textiltechnik at the RWTH Aachen University and is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Stefan Jockenhövel. The Dept. of Biohybrid & Medical Textiles  (BioTex) focuses on the development of fiber-based functionalities in order to comply with the biological requirements. Therefore, BioTex develops conventional materials with added functionality and analyzes novel polymers with regard to their properties as fiber material. In close collaboration with industry and clinical experts, BioTex is working on relevant medical products such as cardiovascular implants (heart valves, vascular grafts, stents), pulmonary implants (pulmonary stents, biohybrid & implantable lung), skin grafts, orthopaedic implants (bone, cartilage, ligament, intervertebral disc) as well as novel networked medical products.

This position is also part of the Chemelot Institute for Science & Technology (InSciTe), a public-private institute for developing smart healing biomedical materials for high quality, affordable healthcare. With its physical nucleus at Brightlands Chemelot Campus, it enables entrepreneurship, expertise, experimentation and education in an open innovation network. In this project, the founding partners, TU/e and DSM, will work together with other RegMedXB partners to achieve their phase-1 aim of bringing a functional regenerative osteochondral implant to first-in-man trials.

Job description

The project of this position concerns the development of a textile scaffold that restricts the swelling of an incorporated hydrogel as an essential part of an osteochondral implant. The implants consist of a cartilage part and an osteoconductive base, which will be developed in parallel before they are integrated. The cartilage approach uses a so-called “hydrospacer”, which is a spacer fabric that is filled with a swelling hydrogel. The swelling hydrogel and the fiber will together be responsible for the load-bearing properties.


Job requirements

We are accepting applications from enthusiastic candidates who are interested in a dynamic, stimulating and ambitious environment to perform their research. The candidate must have a masters degree in mechanical, biomedical or textile engineering, organic/polymer chemistry, biomaterials, tissue engineering or equivalent.

Candidates are expected to have experience with textile technologies, the principles of tissue engineering and medical implants. Experience with fiber spinning and warp knitting are highly appreciated. The candidate will be able to effectively communicate scientific ideas, foster collaboration and have a capability for independent thinking. Moreover, the candidate should be able to work independently within a dynamic team and be skilled in written and spoken English.
