Job description

The Department of Data Analytics at the Graduate School of Business and Economics (GSBE) of Maastricht University offers a 4-year PhD position supervised by dr. Tom van der Zanden. The successful applicant should have (or be close to finishing) a master's degree in (Theoretical) Computer Science, Econometrics, Mathematics, or a related field, ideally with a background in algorithms, graph theory, computational complexity and/or parameterized algorithms/complexity and fixed-parameter tractability.

You will work on analyzing the computational complexity of, and developing algorithms for, problems related to the economics research at GSBE. The project could focus on developing graph algorithms for economic analysis of social networks, or on studying scheduling problems constrained by graphs. There is room to fine-tune the project depending on our mutual interests.

The department of Data Analytics and Digitalisation (DAD) connects data science (mathematics, statistics, computer science, artificial intelligence) with business and economics research (finance, accounting, marketing, information management, operations, micro- and macroeconomics, policy design). You will work in this interdisciplinary department alongside colleagues from various disciplines.

Conditions of employment

Remuneration will be according to standard salary levels for PhD students starting with a salary of €2.541,- with a yearly growth to €3.247,- gross a month (based on a full-time appointment). Each year the standard salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8,3%. You have to be willing to move to (the vicinity of) Maastricht. If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings), you will be eligible for an allowance for moving costs. If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings), you might be eligible for an allowance for alternative housing. Other secondary conditions include a pension scheme and partially paid parental leave.
