PhD position in Computational Systems Biology

Updated: over 2 years ago
Job Type: Temporary
Deadline: 15 Aug 2021

We offer a PhD position in Systems Biology at the University of Twente (UT). The successful applicant will join the Applied Analysis (AA) group at the Department of Applied Mathematics at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science. A strong collaboration with the Developmental BioEngineering (DBE) group is part of the position.

About the project:
Tissue engineering strategies have so far failed to succesfully make articular cartilage. The NWO project SCI-MAP explores the variability of cell differentiation using a systems biology approach. We work with biologists and tissue engineers to advance the use of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) in the clinical setting of joint diseases by determining and understanding key modifiable factors that direct and maintain stem cell differentiation into chondrogenic lineages.

Computational models have the potential to transform experimental biology by describing and understanding observations and ultimately to predict cell behavior. You will work at the interface of applied mathematics and biology developing new models incorporating data from the consortium. Through simulations and numerical bifurcation analysis you will assist with the design of new biological experiments. The PhD project will be carried out under the supervision of Dr. Janine Post (DBE) and Dr. Hil Meijer (AA).
