Job description

PhD position and application
The PhD position focusses on the interface of EU law and national tort law. The PhD supervisors are prof.dr. Jeanne Mifsud Bonnici (professor of European Technology Law and Human Rights) and prof.dr. Albert Verheij (professor of private law, especially contract and tort law). The PhD student will get a desk in either the department of Transboundary Legal Studies or in the Private and notarial law department.

At the beginning of the PhD the PhD student is expected to write a research proposal that is approved by the faculty’s Scientific Research and Ethics Committee.

When applying fort his position a short research plan (see specifications below) needs to be submitted. This allows the applicant to show his/her creativity and research skills. After being appointed the direction of the research will be determined jointly by PhD student and supervisors.

The PhD student carries out the above research and participates in the education programme of the GGSL. Furthermore, he/her participates in teaching. There are ample opportunities to participate in (inter)national conferences and (inter)national workshops and seminars. Specifics will be laid down in the personal Education and Supervision Plan at the beginning of the PhD.


Qualifications
  • LLM (or being in the final phase of an LLM) with excellent marks
  • interested in and experience with legal scientific research and methodology, including comparative legal research
  • highly proficient in spoken and written English
  • demonstrable competences: planning and organising, conceptual capacity, presenting, monitoring, flexibility, independent, analytical skills.

All PhD students participate in the Groningen Graduate School of Law (GGSL). The GGSL organizes the education of research master students and PhD students in the Faculty of Law. The inspiring and stimulating research environment is evidenced by the last external research audit in 2017 that judged research of the faculty of outstanding quality and praised the GGSL for the way in which PhD students are supported and supervised from the start till the very end of the PhD.

This position is partly funded as part of the Cybersecurity Noord-Nederland programme partially financed by the Province of Groningen under the REP-ZZL Groningen programme. The Cybersecurity Noord-Nederland programme is a unique programme in which various different stakeholders in Northern-Netherlands collaborate in cybersecurity research, education and training.


Conditions of employment

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

  • a salary of € 2,541 gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of € 3,247 gross per month in the fourth and final year
  • a full-time position (1.0 FTE)
  • a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income
  • an 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance
  • minimum of 29 holidays and additional 12 holidays in case of full-time employment.

The total duration of the PhD trajectory is four years (48 months). The candidate will initially be appointed for a probationary period of 12 months. After 9 months, a formal performance evaluation will take place. If the performance evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended for the remaining period.

The starting date of the position is September 1, 2022, or as soon as possible after that date.
