Deadline: 31 Jan 2024

Foundations of Stochastic Partial Differential Equations (FoundSPDE).

At the Delft Institute for Applied Mathematics (DIAM), part of Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), NL, a full-time PhD position in the mathematical analysis of stochastic partial differential equations is offered. The PhD candidate will be supervised by Prof. dr. ir. M.C. Veraar (part of the Analysis Group at DIAM). The focus of both of the projects is on well-posedness, regularity, long-time behavior, large deviations and/or approximation of solutions to parabolic and hyperbolic SPDEs of semi- and quasi-linear type. A background in Probability Theory and/or Analysis is preferable. For more information regarding Prof. dr. ir. Veraar's research, please visit https://fa.ewi.tudelft.nl/~veraar/

The starting date has to be before September 15th 2024.

The project is funded by NWO Vici FounSPDE (awared to Prof. dr. ir. Veraar) and includes a generous budget for travel, inviting visitors, participating in conferences, etc.

The successful candidate will focus on carrying out mathematical research. The candidate is supposed to do minor teaching task (at most 15% of the contract time). There will be the possibility to teach (in English). Communication will be in English. If desired, there is the possibility to take Dutch language courses offered by the Language Center for Languages and Academic Skills of TU Delft, see https://www.tudelft.nl/en/tpm/itav

The candidate should hold a Master's degree in mathematics or a closely related area and should have a profound knowledge on analysis and/or probability theory. Furthermore, excellent proficiency in oral and written English is required. Furthermore, the candidate should have interest and ability in working in team.

Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis. For more details please check the Graduate Schools Admission Requirements .

Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. Challenge. Change. Impact!

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three scientific disciplines. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we all use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make completely sustainable and future-proof. At the same time, we are developing the chips and sensors of the future, whilst also setting the foundations for the software technologies to run on this new generation of equipment – which of course includes AI. Meanwhile we are pushing the limits of applied mathematics, for example mapping out disease processes using single cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption. In other words: there is plenty of room at the faculty for ground-breaking research. We educate innovative engineers and have excellent labs and facilities that underline our strong international position. In total, more than 1000 employees and 4,000 students work and study in this innovative environment.
